Which meal kit does your college student use?

Anonymous
First apartment for my sophomore this coming fall. He is looking at Meal kits for food options. We have tried four of them and like HF the best. However EP offers a better student discount, but with all the codes out there he could keep signing up for free meals and free shipping which might be better over the year.

What meal kit has your student used. Please only respond if your kid has used one.

I am braking your rules but I found them too much work as an adult. Way too much for my kids at school. Zest a lemon...

Anyone?

Kid tried Hello Fresh and disliked it. She switched to prepared meals from Fresh Market as a backstop for those days she didn't have time or energy to cook.

I got a Tovala oven and ordered Tovala meals for a while to feed my starving college athlete extra meals when he was home during Covid, if that counts. They were quite tasty and required almost no work. I can’t really imagine him or most kids I know doing this on their own unless it was a local delivery. There is too much packaging to get rid of.

What about putting it in trash/recycle is hard?

Don't kids have meal plans anymore? I had a 2 meals/day plan at the cafeteria and I would grab a bag of bagels for breakfasts. I'm curious when these kids are using meal kits!

Mine prefers the meal kit from Taco Bell.

At my college, and my kids' college, you can't remove food from the cafeteria. This rule was relaxed during covid, you could get a take out box, but prior to that and more recently, you had to eat in the cafeteria. You certainly couldn't bring out a whole bag of any one item.

If a student lives off campus (most students do after freshman year at larger universities) they aren't going to use a meal plan every day.

That sounds like a lot of waste for one person.

Oh I meant I would stop at the little grocery store on campus and buy a bag of bagels for the week. Not that I would take them from the caf.

My college cafeteria said we couldn’t take food out. We had our ways. I had a fruit bowl in my suite that was always stocked, but I never bought fruit.

(see other thread on intelligence)

my kid and I have used blue apron together since she was in 5th grade. She will be a college freshman next year and will live in dorm/eat on a college meal plan. However, after next year, I can foresee her having an apartment and I would definitely have her do blue apron again for herself (and a roommate, if that person was interested)

Exactly. The boxes are bulky, the ice packs are a PITA to deal with, and the whole set up is environmentally unfriendly. A lot of college kids are pretty conscious of the environmental impact of their behaviors. And it seems so much easier to get prepared food at a grocery store or eat out of you can’t cook and are not on a meal plan. All the college kids I know living in apartments are able to cook their own food though.

I can’t comment on which meal plan, but you will have to consider the security of apartment houses. I can see these boxes being stolen.
