If you co-slept with a newborn, how/when did you transition to a crib?

I only plan on co-sleeping for the first 4-6 months. This is my third and the first time I will be officially co-sleeping. We are big on kids in their own beds (my other two have never spent a night in our bed and vice versa) so I want to make sure I know my exit plan. Thank you!

Skipped the crib transitioned straight to a full size bed around age 3, granted by dc was quite large for their age. They stopped cosleeping completely around 4-5.

I also co slept…but had a bassinet/pack n play next to the bed. Sounds like I’m not co sleeping but it was really for those times I’d wake up touched out or wanting to sleep more spread out. We moved him to his own room and sleep trained there after and it was fine.

We co slept right up until he was old enough to CIO (4 months) then transitions him to the crib

OP here- lol this is actually my nightmare and what I'm trying to avoid, but I'm a 100% believer in people doing whatever works for their family.

We coslept at night, and she napped in a bassinet during the day. We transitioned her to a twin bed in her own bedroom when she was 3. For the first year, she would regularly climb into our bed in the wee hours of the morning, but at 4, it stopped and she transitioned fully.

Then why are you co-sleeping at all?

And just to add on: this was for my second child. We could not co-sleep with out first, because he was born very premature, and doctors told us he was too fragile to sleep with adults. We put his crib close to my side of the bed so I could keep an eye on him (he choked badly and turned blue one night, so I was glad I was close enough to hear and pull him up). He never slept in our bed. We loved having DC2 in our bed, actually. Who knows? You might like it too and keep it up for more than your initial period!

I co-slept with two. It lasted until they could sleep through the night. With one kid it took 15 months and with the other kid it took 4.5. I did everything the same with both.

You really can't see why someone would want to co-sleep with a newborn and not with a 5 year old? Really?

There are a lot of nights between newborn and 5. My 4 year old is still a cuddly koala. OP- we transitioned my son to a full size bed at 16 months. It was an economical decision as well since the full size will last 8-10 years. It allows us to read and snuggle together before bedtime. And for one of us to stay with him should he be sick or what normally happens is he comes into our bed and one of the adults sleeps separately, whichever one needs to go into work and get a full nights sleep.

I know a woman whose day care provider took the infant into bed with him and rolled over on him in her sleep and smothered him. Still makes me sick to think of it. Please be careful.

Well was the daycare provider breastfeeding the baby? Because if not this isn't relevant.

We took one side off the crib and fastened the crib to the side of the bed. Later we replaced the crib with a small single bed next to the bed. That was our arrangement until we moved house when DC was 9 years old. The new house had a great floor plan with the two bedroom doors facing each other (small flat in foreign country) which made the transition to DCs “own” room very easy. Nearly 18 yo now and very happy and well adjusted with no issues and good long term friendships and a happy well balanced life about ready to launch! I think it’s natural for kids to want to be physically close to their parents. Especially when sleeping
