Teslas have taken over DC

Anonymous
At least in parts of NW DC. I'm shocked by how many Teslas I see when I'm driving every day. It's great that they are better for the environment that gas-fueled cars, but it's shocking to me that so many people are shelling out close to $100,000 for a car!

The Model 3 is under $50k

I also find it shocking because of the price. We have friends who bought one a few years ago and it was such a novelty, and now I see them everywhere. And mostly not the Model 3 (which is still a very expensive car, for the record).

I will say our friends who bought one early one have used it to really reduce carbon footprint. They now almost never fly domestically -- they take their Tesla and plan routes using the super charger stations. This obviously also helps justify the cost to them, because it's thousands of dollars in flights they aren't paying for anymore, as they travel quite a bit. I think good for them for being willing to do it. They've also had the Tesla for close to a decade now, so it's not just a fad for them.

But I'm guessing most of the Tesla owners I see now are not using them to replace plane travel or holding onto them for a really long time. I think it's become a bit of a status symbol for many. But at least it's a status symbol that doesn't use gas, I guess.

Um, Tesla stopped being a status symbol about 4-5 years ago. It's about on a par with an Audi A4 base model at this point

Tesla's are quirky cars. People buy them for the electric-ness, not for status.

DC has good incentives on electric vehicles.

I disagree. Because of their design, they are very conspicuous. They are meant to be noticed--Hey look, I can afford a high-end model Tesla! The same people who buy this car live in huge houses, so I don't think saving the environment is their top priority.

It makes you wonder if DC is possibly UMC.

You must never visit NOVA. Every other car is some sort of Tesla.

I was going to get one but it looks like Elon is going let Trump back on Twitter so I'll wait for the BMW electric 5 series to come out.

Wut? The design has been the same crappy design for like 12 years. It looked semi cool in 2011 but not today

We were early adopters and drove a Tesla for several years. Tesla builds interesting technology, but really unreliable cars. We finally gave up and went back to plain old Prius - much cheaper, though it still uses gas of course.

Tesla has never been cool. It was created to make a point about the climate, in a way that would appeal to owners of higher-end vehicles (not the Prius owners). But Musk is not known for his coolness, and his cars are not elegant machines - they're the bland, lowest common denominator for rich people.

Which is all perfectly fine.
