| My child's school gives anyone with a 4.0 unweighted GPA the Valedictorian title. So this year there are 102 Valedictorians at his school which I think is insane. This is like half the graduating class. I thought Valedictorian is suppose to be the top student in the school and Salutatorian is the second top student. This school does not rank so there is no top student and they just let everyone be valedictorian. Do other MCPS High schools do this or is this only my child's school? |
| I graduated from an MCPS high school in the 90s and there were no valedictorians or class rank back then. |
| I don't think MCPS has valedictorians. |
| I graduated MCPS in 1990 and we had a valedictorian and salutatorian |
| I can only imagine the pressure cooker parents would put their kids in to be sure Larla gets it! |
| My kids attended two different HSs and neither had valedictorian. I do not remember how the grad speakers were chosen. I do remember one speaker was the first American citizen in her family and had gotten a full 4 year scholarship for collge. It was a wonderful and hopeful speech. |
With all the phony extra grade points for AP basket weaving it wouldn't be especially meaningful. |
Sorry Larla can't handle AP classes. |
What school? |
Can't be an MCPS high school. MCPS got rid of class rank. |
QO |
Interesting, I graduated QO in late 90s and they had a valedictorian and salutatorian then. |
| Unless you grade 1-100 hard to do. With 4.0 a 90 average and 100 average is same grade |

Per board policy, MCPS doesn’t rank the class and doesn’t have valedictorians, and hasn’t for 20+ years. I don’t know why QO would even use that wording. Most (all?) HS recognize their 4.0 students. The SGA president gives a speech. We have so many academically amazing students, there’s just no need to quibble over who is the bestest of the best, despite that being DCUM’s favorite pastime.
This is a perennial topic here. Another thread : https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/977699.page |
I have a child that graduated from QO last year and they surely used that word at the graduation last year and it was so many kids that it seems almost of half the kids were named as valedictorians including my own. They also had it listed next to their name on the graduation program. |
