Brand/model philosophies: Ferrari vs. Lamborghini. Or Wrangler vs. Bronco. Which camp are you? Why?

Anonymous
I fall into “Lamborghini and Wrangler” camps.

Yesterday would’ve been Ferruccio Lamborghini’s 106th birthday, and in thinking about his contributions to automotive design, I thought about his infamous pissing match with Enzo Ferrari, which gave birth to one of the biggest rivalries in automobile fandom. I can relate more to Lamborghini’s working-class attitude and chutzpah, and as a guy who started out making workmanlike products like tractors - which were vital in getting post-war Italy back on it’s feet again. He’s more relatable to me than Ferrari, who only sold cars because he *had* to, to fund his race team.

Then I wondered about another famous rivalry that’s now being rekindled with the reintroduction of the Ford Bronco, in a form more reminiscent of it’s roots, and how it will fare against the perpetual favorite Jeep Wrangler, now into it’s eighth decade of continuous lineage. I’ve always been a Wrangler owner, but I like the Bronco - mostly because it will push the Wrangler engineering team to keep on innovating. And that’s a good thing.

Speaking to the car folks here: which camp are you in, and why?

(and if you’re not, or don’t “get it”, please don’t feel the need to derail the discussion).

Definitely in the Lambo camp, for the reason you stated.

What about the Mustang-Camaro-Challenger tri-valry? Definitely Mustang for me because it’s been in non-stop production since ‘64.

They're probably all at the dealer getting the latest recall work done: https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/toyota-lexus-recall-vehicle-stability-control-software

m’eh, other than Supra’s, old FJ-series Landcruisers, and maybe the “I-want-my-Tacoma-to-be-HiLux” crowd, Toyota doesn’t really inspire passion among their owners. They’re more of a transportation appliance. Appliances have their place of course… but why drive one?

Considering the amount of time you spend in your car, don’t you owe it yourself to drive something that stirs you?

Ferrari is “art”? Pfffffft. Ferrari wouldn’t even exist if old uncle Enzo had pockets deep enough to sustain the lifestyle-illusion he wanted people to believe he had back in the ‘50’s. Ferrari is basically the equivalent of a heiress with the trappings of an estate, who works as an escort to earn enough money to keep the lights on. Compared to art like that, I’ll embrace vulgarity!

As for Jeep/Bronco/LC/LR … I’ve never seen people here take their Defenders off-road. I’ve seen a few old LC’s on a trail or off-road park on occasion, but it’s a rare sight. Broncos are too new, so the jury is still out on them. But most of the off-roading or overlanding done on this continent is done by people driving Jeeps. So your “cosplay” label seems to be misapplied. The Defender is cosplay, defined.

My opinion of L might be tainted by my gross DB neighbor growing up who had a Countach and then a Diablo.

Frankly, I’m not really a fan of Italian cars in general. Hence, “art” for classic Ferrari. I prefer German engineering. And smooth lines.

99% of wranglers aren’t doing any real off-roading. Despite all of their aftermarket accessories. They just fit with the whole “tactical gear” look. My mid-sized SUV can handle most of the actual real-world scenarios these drivers face.

There aren’t many old-school Defenders on this continent, period. My affinity for them developed overseas. The new ones are a joke - they look like an old boxy RAV.

Growing up we had used but I recently rented a Chevrolet Tahoe Z 71 and it was pretty awesome.

I’d LOVE to have a late 70’s K5 Blazer. Those things are great (once you completely rebuild them with aftermarket parts).

TIL (here in my office luncheon) that IH v. Deere is a thing. Either you're red or you're yellow and green. Huh.

Lamborghini - look at me
Ferrari - look at me (but I'll pretend that I don't want the looks)

Jeep - conqueror of mall parking lots
bronco - I want a jeep, but I define myself as not being a jeep person

Wrangler all the way but when we need a new vehicle I might look at the Bronco. Love my wrangler and would get another one. I'd have to test drive the Bronco. I didn't like the range rover or what ever I test drove. It was no nicer than an SUV.

Jeep is much more fun to drive than a regular SUV and the roof off/sky touch roof is great. The Jeep rides much better in the snow/rain/ice than the SUV with AWD I owned. They are just very expensive for what they are.
