| What sports at whitman are possible to play if your child (boy specifically) is mediocre at sports? |
| I'm not sure there is anything. Even cross country and track teams only take the top runners to meets and there are a lot of good runners. It's a huge school. |
|
JV football is actually “no cut.”
Crew is big and welcoming of new people (no experience), but it’s not officially a School Sport. It runs independently. There is also a squash team that advertises prominently, so I assume they welcome new players. Avoid soccer, basketball, swim and tennis. Good luck! |
| Agreed. Sports are so crazy competitive around here. My son is a travel baseball player (for years and years) and is not getting playing time because he's on a high school team of D1 recruits who practically play full time baseball on regional level travel teams. lol. This is baseball but it seems to be the same story with every team. |
Crew at the Montgomery County publics (including Whitman) will generally allow large numbers of kids to practice but they only take the top XX number of kids to the regattas (it depends on the school and the regatta regarding how many boats they enter but if it's one boat it's only 8 kids plus the coxswain). |
How about polo and golf? |
| anything, all the sports teams at Whitman totally suck and lose every game /match / contest |
| Ha ha to the poster who asked about polo and golf. There is golf, I believe, and I think there is water polo too. But as of yet no actual Polo. But I’ll suggest it to the boosters. We just need a place to keep the horses. |
| Wrestling is no cut. As long as they are willing to work hard then being a mediocre athlete isn't a detriment. Whitman usually carries a big wrestling roster and all are welcome. |
I highly recommend cross-country and track. The fact that only the top runners compete in meets doesn’t mean it’s not worthwhile. There are tons of kids who do it for the fitness and bonding. There is also Ultimate Frisbee as a club sport—super fun. |
That’s a good idea. So they don’t cut to get on team and run? Even if not at meets? |
| I think they may have had cuts this year for track. My child is older but in the past they could not fit all the kids in buses for away meets so only a small group went. Everyone could run in the home meets but only top runners got times. |
Yup. You will train every weekday with the team. Usually about 40-50 in XC. Top runners go to meets and sometimes the second tier or lower if there are B meets. Still fun even if you never run in a meet. It’s one of the only Co-Ed sports and there are team dinners and events all the time. I could go on about how great it is. Not a huge fan of the coach who may or may not be returning, but he’s usually only a negative if you are a top runner. |
| I vote for crew. In my high school days it was great for unathletic kids, many of whom proved to be decent, gained confidence, and really bloomed (in general). There’s great cameraderie and it’s fun to be on the water. Plus for many meets they will field loads of boats. Only the really prestigious regattas re limited. |
