Sports at whitman

There’s great cameraderie and it’s fun to be on the water. Plus for many meets they will field loads of boats. Only the really prestigious regattas re limited.

Crew at Whitman?

It’s a mostly white and Asian school, most of the school is mediocre at sports. They will be fine

Not soccer or baseball. Very competitive. Football not so much.

The team stinks and never wins. Ever.

Wrestling is fantastic and will get your child into the best shape of their life. Wrestling promoted an excellent work ethic, sense of personal responsibility, strength of character and mental/physical endurance in while under pressure in our kids. The coaches are amazing too and deeply care about their athletes.

I highly recommend cross-country and track. The fact that only the top runners compete in meets doesn’t mean it’s not worthwhile. There are tons of kids who do it for the fitness and bonding. There is also Ultimate Frisbee as a club sport—super fun.

That’s a good idea. So they don’t cut to get on team and run? Even if not at meets?

Not a Whitman parent but assuming it’s the same all over - the entire team goes to “dual meets” (2-4 teams) during the week. Then there is some selectivity for invitationals on the weekends. But it’s such a good atmosphere, at least among distance runners and x-country kids. There is something about kids who are willing to put themselves through running 3-5 miles every day.

That usually is a good sign for the schools academics.

The club sports - water polo, squash, crew - are open to all and still have great spirit. You need to pay to join, though, and crew and squash sound intense and year round.

The corollary sports - bocce, softball and handball - are open to all and have great fun and spirit. They are also chill.

Co-ed volleyball is supposed to be fun, as are the single gender teams though those take it more seriously.
