Question about Monday May 2nd

Anonymous
Is Monday May 2nd a day off for students? Or is it a half day?
Anonymous
It is listed as a full day off on a testing calendar that our elementary school sent around last week.

Full day off.

Full day off unless your kid has an AP test scheduled that day (mine does, and was told to come to school to take it).

At our HS, the AP gov test was moved from May 2 to later in May. Though I wonder when the makeups will take place?

I think it is a professional development day for teachers and staff

Professional day coinciding with Eid.

No makeups if you take it on the later date. That IS the official AP makeup date

That’s insane. Our hs has hundreds of kids sitting for this exam. What if they’re sick? They’ve studied all year for it. If that’s the policy, they should have arranged for the test to go as planned on May 2.

We were told that nobody would be available to open and staff the school in order for kids to sit the test. Guess you can’t require someone to work on a day off. They also mentioned the issue of transportation, because some kids might not have a way to get to the test if buses aren’t running that day.

They did say if you had some reason you wouldn’t be able to take it on the makeup day, they would arrange for you to take it on the 2nd with the rest of the country. But I’m not sure what those arrangements would be (send you to a site in another school system?), or whether “I might be sick on the makeup date” would be considered a valid reason.

That’s crazy. Just another example of how MCPS ignores what is best for its students.

My kid at Churchill was told to come to school, anyway, to take it that day.

What do you want the county to do? It is a major religious holiday

+1. The College Board could have decided not to schedule exams on May 2nd
