Let's talk about the real world and retakes and deadlines

In the year 2000 a student didn't turn in any work they earned 0. Parents will ground the student and will learn the lesson.

Now the lowest grade we can earned is a 50%...... Parents will write an "excuse on why they couldn't complete the work.....
deadlines?
What deadlines?
Students can submit late work with no deductions! They can go back to previous semesters and submit work without deductions/penalties and the teacher have to accept it and do the paperwork for grade change.

In the real world there will be deadlines. If you miss the deadlines there will be penalty and mommy and daddy will not be able to call the credit card company and tell I can pay when ever I want to..

Let's talk about retakes. You might be able to retake your DMV Test, Praxis EXAM, or other exams but you have to pay for them.
back in the day test were given once and that was it.
When are we going to let students start taking responsible again?

I went to a college that had no grades whatsoever and I have done very well in life.

A 50 is still an F.

What college did you attend?

HIGH F. I earned 40s, 0's , and graduated high school with a 2.71. GPA wasn't as high but I earned my grades. GPA would've been over 3.0 if the lowest grade earned was 50%

Where is this happening? Not HS. Parents will write an "excuse on why they couldn't complete the work.

My kid’s HS has strict deadlines. Missed deadlines are significant point deductions, which continue as it becomes later.

My kid’s HS allows retake however a massing amount of work needs to be done beforehand. If a math test required a retake, the student needs to correct every question, take several other assessments to prove the info is now understood and have a mtg with the teacher beforehand. Oh- and a written request to do so.

That would mean we would have to raise expectations, that's not allowed in FCPS. If anything we should be making a 60% floor, that would raise equity even more.

Why do you care? Get a life!

I look at grades as a percentage of the material a student understands. If they get an 90% on one assignment and 30% on the other, it means they have understood 60% of the course. Now you can't look at it as what % of the material kids understand. If anything the 50% floor has reduced the amount of late work I get. Why turn in a missing assignment if you are already passing? My honors kids want As and will still do it, but gen Ed forget about it. I have so many kids passing classes that haven't even completed half the assignments. You're telling me in the real world you will get by completing less than half the work.

My kid got a 7/14 in an art elective in MS on an assignment (not a test). She did the work. Did poorly and now has completely given up on the class. So yes, let's hand out 50s like candy to kids. Especially in classes no one gives a crap about. Retakes allow kids to feel like there is a reason to keep trying.

And no, there is no retake on this stupid assignment and even if there was, I wouldn't have her do it. It's MS and art. Who cares.

Just sharing to show you how easily kids can give up when they see no way to dig out of a hole. Can't really recover from a 50.

Why did she get 50% in art assignment? Art should be a fun course in in Middle School. A lot of students love Fine Arts classes one of the only classes they can have fun in.

You'd have to ask the teacher. She's not good at art maybe. I don't know. She is a Level IV/AAP student with all A's in every class (including Geometry) and had all As in 7th. Had all 4's since 2nd grade. A good student. Not an artist I guess. She wanted to make all A honor roll like she did last year but that dream is dashed. It's really messed with her head.

Is the ultimate goal to have children turn in work on time or is to learn the subject material? You can want it to be both, but if only one is happening, you need to choose.

Are you aware that these policies don’t exist everywhere? I live in another state and never heard of a re-test until I wandered into DCUM. I wonder if college admission people know of this? Of course they do.

How would they know?
Little Jimmy earned 50% in Unit 9 Exam
Jimmy retakes exams earned highest grade possible 80% 80% will go on the gradebook and they will have no way of knowing if it was a retake or not. I will write a note under the grade, no one beside the student or the teacher will see it.

They might know FCPS has a retake policy but no way of knowing if the student earned the grade because of a retake or first try.
