Stocking the cupboards in the event of a pandemic in the USA

What is the point of stocking? I stayed away from the madness last Friday/weekend. Went to Trader Joe yesterday and Whole Foods today, got everything we needed.

In case you or your family member gets sick and you need to home quarantine for 14 days. Last 2-3 weeks people saw writing on the wall and couldn’t get everything they needed, or realized they needed more stock because almost all have never been in a similar situation.

+1 Other reasons: 1) so one can avoid going out unless it’s unavoidable, so you’re not bringing it home to family members who are more vulnerable 2) avoid exposing others at the store if you are potentially an asymptomatic carrier and unaware 3) having some skepticism of the “supply chains are fine” message.

I ventured out this morning to the local grocery store for produce, because we had zero fresh fruit left, and the only veggies in the fridge were liquefying celery.

There were a lot of people there shopping for 8am!
A lot of very quiet staff restocking the shelves.
Not a single person wearing a mask.
No possible way to stay 6ft away form each other, even at 8 am.

I hope I didn't catch it from that trip - I feel it was a stupid one. Too soon to wear a mask because no-one was, and too soon to feel safe from others, because so many other people out, but late enough to be really dumb.
These veggies better make my kids happy.

Why is it too soon to wear a mask just because others aren’t?

People cannot wear masks if they do not have masks

Isn't that hour of shopping reserved for elderly and those with other compromising issues? Honor system, I realize, but still.

All stores? I looked up the chain online to see if they'd narrowed hours for cleaning, and whether/when they had senior hour, and didn't see anything. No signs anywhere there either.

Stores can't enforce it.

Many stores are not even trying to do this. Stop trying to shame people. PP is fine.

I was feeling grateful to the posters on this thread as I venture down out to my Whole Foods at 8:15 last night, for the first time in a week, and so many things were out: eggs, pasta, sauce, olive oil, chicken, wipes, OJ.

Judge, judge, judge. Not all stores have this policy.

I didn't feel judged. I'd want to be reminded of this, I'm happy to help protect our old.
