So you admit things were different back in the 80s and even 90s and early 2000s as we have been given examples of numerous celebrities who have used blackface as part of a costume on mainstream tv/movies and while receiving some criticism it was not universal as others continued to do it. |
I haven't admitted that. None of the people I went to med school with would have mede fools of themselves like that. |
This. These are some good points. I also know that a big difference between then vs. now is that young African-American grad students WOULD say something: either to the offending party directly, friends, or school administrators. The environment has changed radically in 30 years. It's safer to speak up (though not completely safe). |

His neighboring governor in Maryland has now told him to step down.
Ralph is done. Resign. |
You mean Hogan? Why has he not called Trump to step down? |
|
And it looks like a state GOP senator from VA is found to have been the managing editor at VMI's 1968 yearbook that featured racist images. State Sen. Tommy Norment.
Just announced on Politico and Wa.Post. |

Democrat here. No, they should not resign. Wearing blackface is obviously stupid, wrong and insensitive. Racist as well. But it is not illegal. Moreover, their actions took place in 1980s in the South (Virginia), when and where there was less awareness. Further, neither has participated in similar activities since then, or expressed any ongoing racial insensitivity. Fairfax should remain in place, but the allegations should be investigated If he committed sexual assault (which is illegal), he should resign. If he is cleared, he should remain. Context is important in making judgements. Age of individual, year it occurred, surrounding circumstances. The difference between Clinton and Trump is that Clinton's actions were consensual (except for one rape allegation which never went anywhere) and Trump's actions which were more harassment and more recent. Trump's actions were later in life and later in time. More serious in my mind. Hopefully, today, we would not elect someone with Trump's background. Again, hopefully, we, males, have evolved since Clinton. Turning the tables again, what about the rampant sexism and violence in hip hop music. Acceptable? No. For Justice K, I would have voted against him based on his views, but the allegations against him were old and some made up. Ford's testimony was convincing, but not enough. Grassley's committee should have done a thorough investigation before the hearings, which may have lead to more info or not. The alleged incident decades old was not enough based on current info. We, Democrats, must be careful. Unlike Republicans, we should hold ourselves to high standards, call out our colleagues when and where appropriate, but we must be fair and reasonable. Justice requires it. We know Republicans have no credibility on these issues, or anything else.

It’s not so much the black face as it is him standing next to the clansman. He’s an insensitive jerk. He ran his whole campaign as the sensitive understanding pediatrician.
It is also about the school allowing that kind of garbage into the yearbook. |
He also ran his whole campaign claiming Gillespie was a racist. This is just karma. |
No one in Virginia cares re Hogan. stay in your own backyard. And teach your drivers to use turn signals. |
Lulz |
Oh is THIS the criteria now??!?

Wow. Just wow. |
