Washington Post article about Former Farquhar Administrator

"Counting Jackson Lewis attorneys Weldon Latham and Michael Hatcher and its PAC, Jawando’s state and federal committees have received six checks totaling $5,450 from the firm since 2016. This indicates the possibility of a deeper relationship between the two going beyond just one recent PAC check. Given the firm’s “union avoidance” activities, this is intensely awkward for Jawando, who has relied on union endorsements throughout his political career. What will his union supporters think once they learn of his long-time support from a firm that specializes in stopping their organizing campaigns?"

It doesn’t have to admit let alone fix problems with staff because no one cares long enough to make the board experience consequences.

It's hard to "make the board experience consequences" when the pickings are so slim. Julie Yang is one of the new board members that ousted an incumbent. Look at her Twitter over the last week. Nothing, zilch about this issue. Lynne Harris beat the union-backed candidate. She "didn't see the e-mails". The other contenders that don't get elected tend to be a variety of combinations of crazy/racist/ignorant. Voters do want better board members but they have few options, and it's not hard to see why. No way I would take that job unless I was independently wealthy or retired and bored.

Start stripping their independence. Give the council more authority. Give the executive more authority. Limit attorney-client and HR privilege for administrators and board members. Appoint a monitor who’s accountable to the state board. All of these would require legislation. None of them would require new board members.

Lol ok yes because the state loves ceding authority to the counties, that is like its favorite thing ever
...wait no, the state loves passing costs onto the counties, not power.

I think (because of the public outcry and the excellent post reporting only), that Biedleman himself will be fired. It won't be the usual course of action where is given a cushy job in central office like always. But the buck will stop with him.

No consequences for Eric Minus, McKnight keeps her gig, and no justice of course for the teachers who were wronged by Biedleman.

I'd love to be wrong about that, but thats how I see it playing out.

Also Id like to see someone press all the councilmembers besides Luedkte and Glass who couldnt bring themselves to sign that letter. I mean, cmon.

I hope the reporters keep digging. They may win a Pulitzer Prize.

I hope the teachers find a good law firm to represent them. The lawyers have an incentive to dig deeper to win a bigger settlement.

This! Thank you WaPo and Montgomery perspective. This is journalism at its finest. I hope it brings about the obviously much needed changes. Please keep the heat on MCPS, the BOE and the county council.

Eric Minus doesn't even work for MCPS anymore and hasn't for years.

I understand that. I think he will have no professional fallout though, and obviously should.

+1 If it wasn’t for the Washington Post, the teacher complaints would have been completely covered up. If an outside reporter could link the 18 cases, why couldn’t MCPS? Why was the guy given a promotion?

There’s still a lot of unanswered questions but either the top brass knew of the complaints and did nothing or they are doing a horrible job managing the school system. 18 complaints about the same staff member should have flagged their attention.

Correct. And this fundamental disconnect is not addressed in ANY of the statements that McKnight, Silvestre or the BOE has made, which is what makes them all fall flat.

Even if the investigation needs to happen to sort out ALL of the details, at this point, they should have put out SOMETHING that addresses either how the system was so poorly mismanaged and siloed that no one connected the dots, or how corrupt individuals (to be named post-investigation) purposefully failed at their job and will be held accountable.

I couldn't read the second page of the letter, but it is a good point that the board hasn't formally met to discuss or do anything regarding this, which is concerning and as you point out in violation of MD Law. I imagine it was all done on backchannels with email, phone and Zoom.....

You’re discounting the possibility that the board met illegally.

I hear Eric Minus is with Baltimore county schools. I hope his bosses are aware of what he was involved in so it doesn’t happen again in their district. He should have known better but that’s how it goes in these types of clubs.
