It doesn’t have to admit let alone fix problems with staff because no one cares long enough to make the board experience consequences.

It's hard to "make the board experience consequences" when the pickings are so slim. Julie Yang is one of the new board members that ousted an incumbent. Look at her Twitter over the last week. Nothing, zilch about this issue. Lynne Harris beat the union-backed candidate. She "didn't see the e-mails". The other contenders that don't get elected tend to be a variety of combinations of crazy/racist/ignorant. Voters do want better board members but they have few options, and it's not hard to see why. No way I would take that job unless I was independently wealthy or retired and bored.

Here's a snippet from the press conference on chronic absenteeism, where Silvestre and McKnight address the Beidleman scandal:

I just don't get it. She says its transparent and objective, despite the fact that Jackson Lewis has a pre-existing relationship with MCPS.....

Why do they suck at the basics so much?

It’s Spin 101 from MCPS training - keep saying the same BS and people will believe.

I think staff members would screen emails for Board members are part of the problem. If I found out one of my employees did that I would fire them.

I also think that the Board needs their own independent General Counsel. They are spoon fed from MCPS employees so there is no independent review or counsel on issues that come before them.

Their goal is not to find out the truth. Their goal is to limit their liabilities. And they are very good at this.

Bingo! Biedleman is safe. McKnight is safe.

Start stripping their independence. Give the council more authority. Give the executive more authority. Limit attorney-client and HR privilege for administrators and board members. Appoint a monitor who’s accountable to the state board. All of these would require legislation. None of them would require new board members.

The Board has the power to change the shape of MCPS now. They need to independently investigate complaints about MCPS that come before them. They need to allow hearings that give victims an equal opportunity to be heard and answer questions. They need their own General Counsel so they are not just rubber stamping what MCPS wants.

It’s not enough to say we didn’t know to attempt immunity from this scandal. The Director, Associate Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, Superintendent, and all Board members should have known and they share culpability.

That’s why there needs to be an IG investigation.

This right here is the truth.

There won’t be. 100%.

Hmm. I’m not convinced with all the outcry that some outside agency won’t investigate. If not the IG then perhaps the US Department of Education for multiple Title IX violations. The publication of the allegations in the Washington Post article would give the US Department of Education justification or simply someone (ie. a person who was sexually harassed, a witness, or a concerned citizen) files an Office of Civil Rights complaint. Heck, the County Council members who sent the letters to the IGs could file the US Department of Education complaint.

Lol ok yes because the state loves ceding authority to the counties, that is like its favorite thing ever
...wait no, the state loves passing costs onto the counties, not power.
