UMC suburban college student lied about background to become prestigious Rhodes Scholar

Who is Sandy Cortez? Most kids in BU are scholarship.

Her mother must really be heartbroken.

It's the "Let's Go Brandon" Brigade's new attempt at mocking AOC.

Kind of the political version of monkeys in the zoo.

She conned a few naive friends and a handful of gullible ivory tower professors want to believe they helped groom some poor girl when it was actually just a rich private school lifer pretending to be poor. Easy marks.

The truth is that Penn knew her price school history. She made no secret of that in her application. The professors also knew her private school pedigree. They weren’t conned at all. Penn is crying that they were duped, but they’re lying. They saw what they wanted to see and ignored the rest. That’s on them.

As with most of the posts here, your comment is completely fabricated. But I hope you feel better after feeding your smug moral superiority.

Okay, PP.

Doesn't change anything about the fabrications and lies. Let's wait until she takes this to trial and see what shakes out. She's an adult -- if she wants to air it all out and have her story tested and publicly evaluated for truth, she can do that.

I suspect the mother has plenty of evidence. What's shocking is that a doctor with one child couldn't control that one child. I suspect the mother got bad advice in the beginning.

Maybe she is still getting bad advice.

Who knows? But it can either die on the vine (if it gets dropped) or get examined in the harsh light of day (if there is a trial).

Either/or. Each of the options would suffice. Either we stop hearing about her, or we stop discussing from a distance with the "UPenn is a bulllly!" and "y'all are meeeaann!" smoke bombs.

The mom probably had her own life and not very involved. I suspect she paid for the last year of private as you have to prepay.

The girl will run back to MD mom soon once she's in the real world and needs money. For five years she's lived off free money from scholarships and financial aid refunds. Being an Ivy League student is hardly a harsh life, especially when everything is free. Let's see the spoiled brat go get some $40K social worker salary in Philly and see how fun it is. She'll weasel her way back to MD mom and hope to get her name back in the will.

Someone close to the girl if not the girl has been in this thread and repeatedly said the ritzy day school gave her a "full scholarship" for 12th grade. Her school is $30,000 a year. But then someone recently claimed she was in the foster system for two years. So did she get "full scholarships" for both 11th and 12th?

I want to know is what kind of car she got for her Sweet 16th birthday. An only child with a doting rich mother at a pretentious private school suggests she got some nice wheels.

A local doctor with one kid isn’t like some executive whose jet-setting around the country It sounds like mom and daughter were besties & around each other constantly..... up until the mom met a guy. Do we know anything about the guy? Maybe he was a creep and mooching off the mom. Who knows.

She pulled the stunt in September of her junior year. I assume she chose the time because the tuition (which her mother had paid as usual) had just become non refundable. And the person was arguing very carefully: they said she lived with foster families for two years. Mackenzie was in the foster system for less than a year, from the fall of her junior year until the August before her senior year. But she continued to live with her last foster family throughout her senior year of high school. So: one year in the foster system, one year of scholarship, two years “living with foster families.”

With Mackenzie, you have to parse every word.

Not only would high school tuition have been paid, September happens to be the same month QuestBridge apps are due. Maybe she stumbled upon QuestBridge, say on reddit or college confidential, and it got her thinking...

I recall stumbling upon those QuestBridge threads on college confidential and being amazed at the schools some of the kids were getting into.

I contend the entire thing was an admissions con. Her being class president tells us she was a striver long before gunning for a Rhodes. Her QuestBridge list likely had HYPS at the top, followed by the other Ivies.

So a rich medical doctor with lots of status in the community drops at least $90,000 over three years at this school. Yet senior year the school officials buy the kid's version of events over the mother's and give her $30,000 in scholarship aid? That makes little sense. Were grandparents paying her tuition?

I agree the whole thing was a con, but it was a premeditated one. She applied for Questbridge 12 months after the incident. Incident is September of her JUNIOR year. Questbridge application was September of her SENIOR year.
