This is the summary. VA following NY in attacking kids. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2021/06/left-targets-testing-gifted-programs/619315/ But as unpopular as “Defund the police” is, local progressive activists have found a cause even more anathema—and are pushing it with even greater vigor. Eighty-three percent of American adults believe that testing is appropriate to determine whether students may enroll in special or honors programs, according to one of the country’s longest-running continuous polls of attitudes toward education. George Packer: When the culture war comes for the kids Yet across the U.S., blue-state educational authorities have turned hostile to academic testing in almost all of its forms. In recent months, honors programs have been eliminated in Montgomery County, Maryland, and Seattle. On Long Island, New York, and in Pennsylvania and Virginia, curricula are being rethought to eliminate tracking that separates more- and less-adept student populations. New York City’s specialist public high schools are under fierce pressure to revise or eliminate academic standards for admission. Boston’s exam schools will apply different admissions standards in different zip codes. San Francisco’s famous Lowell High School has switched from academically selective admission to a lottery system. |

From the Atlantic article:
"Special programs don’t poll as well when the questions stipulate that many Black and Hispanic students would not qualify for admittance. But the programs’ numbers rebound if respondents are assured that students will have equal access to test prep. The New York Post reported earlier this year on an education-reform organization’s findings that almost 80 percent of New Yorkers would want to preserve selective testing at the city’s elite high schools if it were combined with free access to test-preparation coaching for disadvantaged groups. (The organization is supported by Ron Lauder, the cosmetics heir and Bronx Science graduate, and Richard Parsons, a former CEO of Citigroup and economic adviser to President Barack Obama.) The New York City Council is currently considering a bill that would fund just such test prep for all middle-school students. Adams, the city’s likely mayor-in-waiting, has proposed expanding the number of selective high schools and guaranteeing more spots to top middle-schoolers from across the five boroughs. His fund-plus-reform policing formula may have secured him the Democratic nomination. In the same spirit, coach-expand-test may meet the wishes of urban voting publics. But rather than expanding gifted programs, many self-proclaimed reformers are moving to shut them down, public opinion be damned. The intention behind the changes is equity. The result is to ignite a thousand local battles over race, class, and opportunity." |
Some parents with very extreme political views and aggressive agendas and brains broken by Facebook took over the PTSA at TJ. But they were so toxic and deranged that the Virginia PTA revoked the TJ PTSA's charter. |
- The current TJ PTA president from last year's election is for FCPS and admission change. (She will tell you she is neutral but she works the hardest to defeat those parents who oppose FCPS's admission change) - There were two rounds of election this year. Despite the effort from the president, "her side" lost. Dr. Harry is elected as president-elect with a majority of the new board just a month ago. Harry is against the current form of FCPS admission change. - They couldn't work out their differences internally. "Her side" complained to VA PTA. - VA PTA sent an intent letter two weeks ago to disband the TJ PTA charter and seize the asset of about $80k. - Harry with the majority of the new board wrote a response letter to VA PTA. |

Parents are absolutely entitled to their opinion and to advocate on a personal level for or against the admissions changes. And they can join lawsuits, etc in their personal capacity. But the role of the PTA is to support all the students/parents/staff . And, the margin of "victory" for several of the newly elected reps was 2 votes in one case so please don't tell me they have a mandate and are representing the whole school. My hope is that after a year of this cluster, non-political candidates will come back to the PTA and return to fundraising, activity organizing, etc. |
You are why DCUM sucks so much. It's toxic. Shut it down. |

If the TJ PTSA must be non-political, why can't the VA PTSA?
As a non-Fairfax TJ parent, is it appropriate that I have no whatsoever in school policies? |
Ties to extremist publications are useful in helping to nationalize and promote a political agenda by positioning TJ as an example to feed the outrage machine. There's an illiberal, authoritarian energy about all of it. |
It's a shakedown, pure and simple. The smart money have given up on school systems like FCPS already. Between the woke School Board members and the corrupt ones, it's a failed system. |
The Virginia PTA is anything but a benign force for good. Shut it down. |
Harry was just elected. He has not done anything. He is entitled to his belief. He was elected because of his views. Baking cookies and advocating for students and parents are not mutually exclusive. There was a survey of parents where 80% of the respondents opposed to the current form of admission change. The previous board hid it. Harry wants the new board to be more transparent. It's unfortunate the current president can't take a loss and drag the VA PTA into internal conflicts. |
I think you misunderstood me. When I said shut it down, I was referring to DCUM.
I agree. Shut down the VA PTSA. Create a TJ PTO. We don't need the NEA to take over everything related to schools. |
| From the outside it just seems like maybe the new president (harry, I guess) isn't doing such a great job when the organization he leads massively imploded the minute he gained control of it. These are the facts. |
Every ounce of this goes back to last year’s corresponding secretary, the public figure Asra Nomani. As a member of the Executive Committee, she used her position as a 2021 parent and as a former WSJ correspondent to launch a crusade against the admissions process and inappropriately published many articles directly attacking the school’s administration in publications to include the school’s official PTSA Newsletter. She is the unquestioned leader of the status quo advocates and Q4TJ, which has become about the sorest bunch of losers this school system has ever seen. The new president elect has also openly advocated against the admissions reforms on multiple platforms. He stands to take over as president in the 2022-23 school year, at which point he will be on record as believing the class of 2025 to be fraudulent and illegitimate. With every word that comes out of these people’s mouths on public and anonymous platforms, they further show beyond a shadow of a doubt why these reforms are so desperately needed. The overt Asian supremacy must stop. |
