They are trying to. My hope is that they do find strong URM kids to fill those seats and the process works as intended. However, I suspect they will force fit some kids into the school. The teachers aren't going to reduce the rigor of their classes and if the kids aren't up to it, they will be in for a shock and most will drop back to base. That's the worst possible outcome. If that's what ends up happening, what will FCPS do? Screw things up even more? Water down the curriculum? Shut down TJ? That's the big question. Would have been so much better if they focus on KG-Middle school outcomes at underserved schools so deserving kids bubble to the top.. But that's too much work for these people. They don't really care to help. They just want to please their current political masters, run the clock, collect a fat pension and retire. |
+ 100 worst principal ever for TJ. Look at her bio though. Looks like the one you’d hire if you already had plans to wreck TJ. |
I thought TJ had already been watered down a decade ago when they had to add in math catch-up summer school because FCPS wasn’t sending prepared enough kids? I don’t like the SB changes much, but I find the rehashing of the same debates, same freak outs, and same proposed solutions every 3 or 4 years absurd. -aluma from upthread |
So admission changes that foster greater diversity are racist whereas ones that are easily gamed aren't? |
Well then, let's just have racial quotas. |
The new process seems like a huge upgrade since it minimizes the impact of prep and optimizes natural ability. I'd wager that this new crop of students will be the strongest it in TJ's history. |
Ya, most of the complaining is by parents who are bitter they can't game the selection as easily as before. |
It seems safe to assume you just prefer the new game and the advantages it gives non-Asian applicants over the old game. |
Or the old game clearly gave advantages to a group that occupies 70% of the school currently. That seems more plausible somehow. |
The anti-School Board group is reporting that it won all but one of the seats on the TJ PTSA.
Fantastic - this needs to happen at other schools that have been shat upon by the School Board, and the School Board members recalled. |
Not sure how a single school PTA will show the school board anything or lead to recalls. Also, can't really call it a mandate - the vote difference - less than 30 votes and close to 50/50 for most of the races- sends more of the message that the parents are rather evenly split. To me, the issue is about how the school will integrate the Class of 2025 and/or advocate for future changes to the new admission policy while representing all the families and supporting all the kids. |
This is correct. The TJ PTSA has had essentially no impact on policy as is, and they had essentially the founder and primary mouthpiece of Coalition for TJ in their ranks as the Corresponding Secretary - someone with a very big megaphone and a wide followership. With the margins being as slim as they were this year (which was shocking, by the way) they won't last long as a power base once an entire class of families enters the school via a process that they publicly reject. |
LOL. A school PTA - yeah, that's a powerful and formidable group. |
Right? But people here will act like they have a voice because they're the PTSA at TJ. Give me a break. |
Only way to get school board members recalled is circulate and sign recall petitions. 3 already out there. |
