Fantastic - this needs to happen at other schools that have been shat upon by the School Board, and the School Board members recalled.

Not sure how a single school PTA will show the school board anything or lead to recalls. Also, can't really call it a mandate - the vote difference - less than 30 votes and close to 50/50 for most of the races- sends more of the message that the parents are rather evenly split. To me, the issue is about how the school will integrate the Class of 2025 and/or advocate for future changes to the new admission policy while representing all the families and supporting all the kids.

These are not especially outstanding results for the status-quo mob, given that they literally published their "recommended slate" of candidates and ran unopposed in two races. One race had a margin of literally two votes.

Good luck next year.

why wait, once the new class starts and parents can join, why not just vote to oust the current leadership?

There isn't a mechanism to do that. They'll have an opportunity in this window next year.

The PTA is just a volunteer body that take care of things like cupcakes and yearbooks. It's important for this group to represent the entire student body so there's participation from all parents for the benefit of all students. Please leave politics out of this.

I'd be thrilled if the people who are running the TJ PTSA would "leave politics out of it". But they don't. They send newsletters encouraging parents to write to their school boards because students are being taught lessons in social-emotional learning - something that is BEYOND desperately needed at TJ and has been for the entirety of its existence - and have a link to a PTSA-hosted webpage that solely exists for people to copy and paste the emails of all of the higher-ups to make it easier to pester them.

And the opposing parties are doing the opposite.. I don't think it's too difficult to get a listing of all parents and do the same even if you are not organized as the PTA. The other group should force a resolution asking for the PTA to not spend any money on political efforts.

The PTA is funded by parent contributions and by outside entities like the Partnership Fund. Ideally, you want all parents to join. If 50% drop out because of this nonsense, it's the students that lose.

I am so sad at what all those people did to a wonderful school experience for my kids. On top of all the hardships of covid, my kids had to deal with hate-filled talk from leadership and a divided school community. Truly heartless.

I don’t know what to do with the elections. I disapprove of the sloppy and racist admission changes but I don’t need the PTSA advocating in a way to further divide and hurt the kids. I am thinking about voting half and half and make them all work together.

I do wish bonitatibus were gone. She was truly cruel to the students.

Yes, the race neural admissions policies are racist because one group may or may not still account for 70 percent of the student population! And it's so cruel to be concerned about economically disadvantaged kids or to want TJ to serve the entire FCPS community. Racist, cruel and evil--did I miss any other buzzwords?

It's the same crap that white people used to use to prevent fair hiring practices for literally all other minorities in the mid-1900s. The EXACT same language and coding.

Wow - OP back - just received this email from VA PTA:

Dear TJ High School PTSA Members,

It is with a heavy heart and mind that the first communication I provide to you as valued members of Virginia PTA is one of the intent of revocation of the Charter for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology PTSA (TJHSST PTSA).

TJHSST PTSA is organized and operates as a 501(c)3 subsidiary under the tax-exempt group umbrella of the parent organization Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers, commonly known as Virginia PTA, and registered as the parent organization with the Virginia State Corporation Commission, Entity ID 00266536.

Throughout the past nine months, various members of Virginia PTA have attempted to work with members of your Executive Board, past and newly elected, to resolve various conflicts surrounding duties of officers and as board members of PTA. Any acting board member has an obligation to act ethically and avoid all conflicts of interest when making decisions for the PTA. Board members have the responsibility to recuse themselves from their responsibilities any time they have a problem keeping their fiduciary duty to the PTA, or, in other words, representing the PTA's best interest.

While we have been successful in coming to an understanding of some issues, we have not been successful with resolving the following critical areas of concern:
Failure to adhere to PTA values and principles
Creation of a climate that discourages parent engagement
Failure to seek general membership approval for advocacy initiatives
Campaigning conflict of interest
Failure to follow Bylaws adopted by TJHSST PTSA membership
Conflict of interest and inappropriate representation of values and brand to the press
Bullying of elected officers and members who hold different views

The revocation of the charter has the following consequences, as outlined in the TJHSST PTSA Bylaws, Article 4: Relationship with National PTA, Virginia PTA and Constituent Associations, Section 16. Each local PTA/PTSA is obligated upon withdrawal of its charter by Virginia PTA to:
Yield and surrender all of its books and records and all of its assets and property to Virginia PTA or to such agency as may be designated by Virginia PTA or to another local PTA/PTSA organized under the authority of Virginia PTA.
Cease and desist from the further use of any name that implies or connotes association with Virginia PTA, National PTA or status as a constituent association of National PTA.
Carry out promptly, under the supervision and direction of Virginia PTA, all proceedings necessary for the purpose of dissolving such local PTA/PTSA.

We understand that you will have a lot of questions about how Virginia PTA will move forward. We will not have all the answers immediately as we are in the beginning stage of the process. TJHSST PTSA executive board is afforded the opportunity to respond to the notice of intent to revoke the unit's charter no later than Wednesday, July 7, 2021. As TJHSST PTSA members, you can communicate with your executive board at executive@tjptsa.org.

It is unfortunate to have to provide this news but as a PTA, our values will remain what they have always been:
Collaboration: We will work in partnership with a wide array of individuals and organizations to broaden and enhance our ability to serve and advocate for all children and families.
Commitment: We are dedicated to children’s educational success, health, and well-being through strong family and community engagement, while remaining accountable to the principles upon which our association was founded.
Diversity: We acknowledge the potential of everyone without regard, including but not limited to: age, culture, economic status, educational background, ethnicity, gender, geographic location, legal status, marital status, mental ability, national origin, organizational position, parental status, physical ability, political philosophy, race, religion, sexual orientation, and work experience.
Respect: We value the individual contributions of members, employees, volunteers, and partners as we work collaboratively to achieve our association’s goals.
Accountability: All members, employees, volunteers, and partners have a shared responsibility to align their efforts toward the achievement of our association’s strategic initiatives.

For your reference, the letter provided to your executive board is included in this email.
Intent Letter
Sincerely,

Pamela Croom
State President, Virginia PTA

I cannot believe the VA PTA kicked TJ's chapter out. This is so out of bounds and really troubling for a benign organization like the VA PTA to exercise such heavy handed tactics. Whenever I think this stuff can't get worse, it does.

VA PTA should have its tax exempt status revoked. The parents elected the new officers. Let them help the students.

Only way to get school board members recalled is circulate and sign recall petitions.

3 already out there.

Also recall the woketard principal.

Promote that principal to Superintendant and get an even more woke one for TJ to help clean up the mess.

What mess is that? TJ is the best high school in the country with the lowest student misconduct.

Sounds like the current principal is doing a pretty good job

She’s not. She inherited a great, school, from Glazer and has completely broken it. — parent.

The current principal is awful! She never showed any interest in the current kids but came in with the agenda to get different kinds of kids at the school. The previous principal was great! He really understood and connected with the students.

I don't understand what is going to happen now? How are parents going to do the normal things like teacher appreciation, grad parties, etc? Where is all of the money that has been raised previously going to go? This is so confusing. This email really should have been sent in conjuction with a message from the Principal.
