HPV VACCINE

Imagine one day getting a cancer that was almost entirely eradicated and 100% preventable with a shot your mom just didn’t feel like getting. Hope she gets it for herself as soon as she’s 18 and you don’t get to control her health anymore.

If you could read, you’d see that I said we would get it, just not now. So much judgment here. Wow

There IS a lot of judgment, and this is because of the much-publicized anti-vax rhetoric that now makes people assume that ANY hesitation and ANY questioning about ANY vaccine means you are anti-vaccine.

One should always investigate and ask questions. Being "educated" and having "good sources" is not a qualifier having and asking legitimate questions.

Sadly, there is not enough good information out there in enough easy to understand and easy to FIND formats when compared to the amount of incomplete, confusing, misleading or just plan false information that is all too readily available.

Public health has its work cut out for it in the era of the internet, and more needs to be done. I don't know what that is, or what that would look like, but it is clear that something is out of proportion with "information competition".

The snarkiness around discussing vaccines and available vaccine information, is, in my opinion, a direct reflection of this.

The vaccines are timed. You don't just get to decide when your DD will get it. There are three vaccines. The first two at 11 and the third is at age 12. I am sure the pediatrician told you that.

NP here and wrong. If she gets it before she turns 15, she can do it in 2 doses 6-12 months apart.

It’s just hubris you think you’re gonna go google all the data and somehow synthesize and understand it better than doctors and scientists.

Agreed- 2 shots only if you start and finish before the child is 15. Think of it like the covid shot- For an 11 yr old, it is 2 smaller doses. Once you hit 12, you get two adult doses. Same with HPV but I think the age you shift is 15.

I got by my kids the HPV vaccine on schedule (11 & 12) for this reason -- that's the age at which the immune system has the best response to the vaccine.

From the American Cancer Society website (sorry, it's not Reddit but maybe it'll do):

Why should the HPV vaccine be given to pre-teens?

The vaccine work best at this age. Research shows that younger people have a better immune response to the vaccine than those in their late teens and early 20s.

My 52 year old male cousin is currently battling a very aggressive cancer in his neck that his drs said was caused by HPV in his throat that metastasized. The HPV came from him performing unprotected oral sex, perhaps decades before. To say he and his wife are in shock would be an understatement. He’s getting great care at MD Anderson and we are praying that he beats it. Get the vaccine unless your dr advises against it!!

No more vaccines people. Florida, Texas, and now VA.

GOP is going to make sure these are no longer available.

Polio, Whooping Cough heading your way.

This vaccine will be no different.

Within 5 years I had HPV and have had to have two surgeries and been so scared and devastated of what it meant for my future. I am so angry I did not fight for the vaccine. I was young and just took what they said as fact. I should have been given it, and would not have ended up in the situation I ended in (and yes, I always used protection and had only 4 partners all monogamous in my life). Please get this vaccine for you children.

So sorry this happened to you. The guidelines now provide that it can be given to anyone 45 or younger.

If, like me, you are 47, you’ve been a click or two above the age they keep raising it to the entire time. Super frustrating.

Wait. What? I'm turning 45 next month. Should I be talking to someone about this? I don't have a primary care anymore.

You can schedule it at CVS and get it, you don’t need a primary care

DD13 just got her second (and last) at our local pharmacy on Friday along with her flu shot. No side effects and not even a sore arm.
