HPV VACCINE

Anonymous
My aunt is dying from HPV cancer right now. It showed up as throat/mouth cancer almost two years ago. She's a MAGA/MAHA type who thought chemo was poison and did "alternative" therapies for a while. Had the vaccine been an option, I'm betting she wouldn't have gotten it.

This is a totally preventable cancer for our kids' generations. I can't imagine choosing to not vaccinate one's child against HPV knowing that there is a chance your kid may end up being the one who gets cervical or other cancers due to having HPV (by the way, most adults do get the HPV virus at some point in their life, there are just a small number of people for whom that infection becomes cancer later in life. Why take the risk???)

Jobs was not MAGA/MAHA and did the same thing... I, on the other hand, am a conservative (not necessarily full MAGA, but...) and I am all for vaccination, as long as its properly tested and (relatively) proven safe. Been getting vaccinated my whole life.

She isn’t wrong. Chemo is poison. We just hope it kills the cancer, before it or the cancer kills you. But that often doesn’t happen. I’ve seen countless people suffer terribly from chemo, which only proved to worsen and prolong their suffering and give them a miserable last months/weeks of life. That doesn’t mean it can’t sometimes cure people and ultimately help- but I completely understand why some would forgo it. Don’t be so judgmental

My sons had very weird reaction to the first shot. Never had an issue with any other vaccine, extremely healthy kids. Doctor said we could just skip the 2nd dose if we were worried. That was 2018.

Now studies in Sweden and elsewhere say 1 shot is sufficient.

My daughter has had both doses. HPV is extremely prevalent and being able to protect her against HPV-caused cancers was a no-brainer for us.

Stupid health care decisions affect us all, in the form of higher expenditures for Medicare and insurance premiums.

Wait, are you saying that someone can’t choose to decline chemotherapy? They must do it for the good of us all?

What makes it stupid to deny chemo? I have seen many people with cancer suffer in unimaginable ways as a result of chemo. It definitely depends on your individual situation: type of cancer, how advanced, prognosis. There are a some cancers, that if I got, I would not do chemo and just accept my prognosis and live the best I can with the time left.

Both of my kids (boy and girl) got 2 doses. My daughter’s lymph node did swell a lot for a month or two but I guess that is just proof that it stimulated an immune response. Doctor was not concerned.

I got the first Moderna HPV vaccine at age 21 when it first came out. I recently got the more advanced version (1st dose of 3) at age 40. I had no reactions to any of them and have never tested positive for HPV (knock on wood this continues). Seems like a total no brainer to me to prevent cancer. I'm female, but also vaccinate your sons! They can be positive and transmit HPV with no way to test which puts them and their partners at risk.

We had a good friend and military officer die from HPV derived cancer 10 years ago.

This vaccine could have saved her life!

This is a very old thread, but I'm glad to see a near consensus on the HPV vaccine.

Sure, decline chemo, but then start privately funding all of your end-of-life care if you're going to ignore medical best practices recommended by the doctors.

Both my kids - boy and girl - got it. You can get all kinds of cancers with HPV, not just cervical cancer for women. Michael Douglas got throat cancer from oral sex. Marcia Cross got rectal cancer from anal sex.

I am cautious about vaccines and so I make it a point that my kids are in good health and only get one vaccine at a time.

OLD THREAD, but I made sure my 3 boys were protected from oral cancer and spreading the virus to their partners.
