Private & Independent Schools
| Landon doesn't "bring in recruits" in upper school for sports. But many families whose sons have started to demonstrate athletic promise and academic competency choose to apply there in the upper school, as they also do to STA and Prep. Those 3 schools offer the best mix of academics/athletics and are great options for good students who want to play sports at a high level and potentially in college and still get a good education. The applicant pool to these schools will include more athletes than at a place like Sidwell or GDS. |
| Another big factor is that these schools are all-boys schools |
| 10:53 is right about big donors' sons and Board members' sons (who are often one and the same) being cut more slack, not just with disciplinary issues, but also with -- at least in the lower grades -- sports. I've definitely seen sons of big donors who made teams where other more talented players were cut. But not at the varsity level. |
|
Whenever someone's son doesn't make a team, the parents find it hard to believe and look for other reasons, such as a nepotism or favoritism for a donor's son.
The coaches at Landon are serious people who want the best players. This isn't college where a big donor means millions of dollars. Coaches in high school could care less about that stuff. If you're not talking about the varisty level, then what? I didn't think there was much in the way of cuts in middle school? |
| No dog in Landon fight. I would assume that board kids, donors get a break when it comes to discipline - but surprised to hear people suspect team sports rosters are influenced. Does that continue on to worries about playing time? Seems a little bit too conspiratorial to me. |
| 1524 is flat out wrong. That simply does not happen. This is garbage perpetuated by jealous unrealistic parents at many local schools. My kids went to STA and Landon and there was never a hint of this. Their friends who went to Prep also never claimed such a thing to happen. But there's always a few parents at every school who float this type of garbage out there. Teachers, coaches, admins and other families know who those psychos are, and that they are a joke in their respective community. |
| Landon parent here- no cuts in the lower grades for sports teams- some in middle school for basketball but not lacrosse or football and certainly across different sports at the upper school level. |
NP here - I do have a dog in this fight and I feel that your tone is not helping the image of either school. You may be correct, I don't know, but please let's be civil and not call other families "psycho". Thank you. |
| Actually, there are cuts in MS athletics. No cuts in LS, of course. |
| Depends on the Sport in MS. For the a sport like lacrosse, they have cuts for both the 7th grade and 8th grade teams since well over 30 boys try out from each grade. |
| There are cuts in other MS sports as well. |
Seriously...are you a coach, donor, or board member? |
| there are cuts in MS for tennis, basketball, hockey and golf. Except for basketball those sports are middle school teams and have limited numbers available. |
Whoever they are they should think before they speak. I do not want to be associated with people that talk or think like that. As a parent at one of these schools, I associate with nice, thoughtful parents that actually care about the children and the quality of the schools academic and social environment. Neither school is perfect (obviously) but I'm sick of the vitriolic posts in defense of the schools. Those posters do not speak for me and they make us all look as out of control as they are. |
Amen. |
