No I am seeing their chatter on various facebook forums. Specifically they are panicked as they recently learned from an MCEA email that Dr. Gayles has no power to keep schools closed. They thought he was going to be their savior and keep schools closed until the pandemic was over, but BOE/MCPS has 100% authority to open or close schools. Also the state can order schools closed, which they will not.

I belong to both of the “semi-official” FB groups and do not see panic. If you are lurking on fringe pages, you probably see opinions that are not mainstream among MCEA members.

I talked to a union folk just yesterday. There was no panicking, as far as I could tell. This particular folk was hoping to be back at school for at least the last quarter of the 2020-2021 school year.

On the other hand, that was in real life, not social media, so you should probably discount it accordingly.

There have been SO many of these across multiple districts in the DMV.

Petitions are a waste of time. Online petitions are an even greater waste of time. They exist to make people be able to sit at home in their PJs and pretend they've done something.

I'm not saying Gayles is right. He seems awfully conservative. But to claim that "the science" has the definitive answer on schools and "the CDC" is omniscient, when we're only 9 months into this and we have thousands of years of history of "everybody" knowing a scientific principle and then it turning out to be wrong, is absurd. This is a disagreement about risk assessment and probabilities, not "the science." Nobody is certain. Neither side should act like they have The Answer and The Knowledge.

Thank you for bringing some actual facts into the discussion. Now since they don't fit the open schools agenda, they shortly be summarily shouted down, ridiculed and eye-roll-emoji-ed, because they don't fit the false narrative.
