Colleges that reopened and are shutting down

Inaccurate. The University of Michigan Ann Arbor isn’t open yet, although students who live off campus may be back in town. Students are just beginning to move into dorms today. Classes start a week from today, and 70% of them are virtual.

What you consider normal is not normal. Most schools have the majority of their classes as optional. As a student what are you going to pick? stay in my bed, click on my class or get out of bed and go?

The professors are deciding what is online and what isn't and most will be online. For those with some my school is better than yours because we have in person classes report back after a few weeks and everyone is going nuts and they start mingling more.

Well since both my kids sent pictures of themselves walking to their 8:00 am classes this morning, I can give you an answer, but probably not the one you were hoping for.

Kids began moving into dorms over the weekend.

Did someone mention Bucknell?

Bucknell University updated its COVID-19 online dashboard on Monday reflecting there are now five students and one staff member who tested positive for the respiratory disease. That’s up from one case, a students, as previously reflected by the dashboard.

My son’s friend packed up and left Bucknell the other day. Don’t know when or why they left though.

To the great disappointment of all the hand wringers here, it’s simply not happening. My kids are all back at school and reporting near universal observance of the protocols that have been put in place (and swift action when necessary). They are all very impressed with everything that is being done at their schools.

Which schools?

All the ones you AREN’T reading about. There are more than 4,000 universities in the United States, and how many are you hearing about over and over again? Just the couple where things aren’t going as smoothly as they’d hoped.

Please name a few schools that have been open for >1 week, with students on campus, where things are going smoothly.

Juniata college...so far

I'm rooting for Juniata, but their COVID tracker shows that they only did 38 tests in the past 7 days. I know it's a small school, but that doesn't seem like enough.

That tested like 1700 people the weekend before last, when kids moved back on campus.

And staff before that.

So they have tested a lot of people (and when I last heard, had only 3 positives at move-in).

My kid’s liberal arts college did only mail-in testing, not move-in testing, so they boasting having zero positives at move-in They *might* do asymptomatic testing. My kid is doing remote. I don’t think they have a dashboard. The college is a good fit otherwise so my kid will still go eventually.

Classes haven't started at UMich yet and move in is just starting today.

To make it clear: this post relates to Juniata.

Here is a link to their dashboard.

https://www.juniata.edu/coronavirus/

The second row, and graph shows how many tests they have carried out overall (vs past 7 days).

Seems like they have strong plans in place. But like all schools...time will tell.

Yes, but there could be people who tested negative when they arrived but are actually positive and I don’t think they’ll capture those people with such a small number of post-arrival testing. I hope they make it work, but that does seem like a flaw to me.

This qualifies as news outside of a student newspaper? The basic issue is that the University hadn't cleaned the quarantine room and didn't help her move her crap. Everyone should have known that if you test positive, you will spend two weeks in quarantine. Life can be unfair. Deal with it.

I truly hope that when something bad happens to you that someone doesn't give you any sympathy they just say "deal with it"

Good god, do you have zero sympathy?

It may surprise you, but I have been in bad situations with no sympathy from others. I dealt with it. These are often good learning experiences. Eventually your snowflake will have to grow up. A dirty room and lack of delivered food is simply not life threatening if she has sufficient money to order delivery.

Ah, misery loves company, eh?

You really are an awful person.
