Unfortunately MCPS makes it complicated. If your kid wants to take 3 years of a language in MS, there can be issues.

I am surprised they don’t offer french 3ab and Spanish 3ab is new this year , older DC ‘s school offer other, I thought it is standard..

I have a kid entering 8th and their year was quite easy to see and figure out. This year? Less options. New math class, no cohort for HIGH, election process changed and options drastically decreased.

More kids interested in Spanish, I guess? Or easier to find staff.

Are this years 8th graders the first year allowed to take 1a/1b in 6th grade? Is French 1a/1b offered in 6th now too? Do those kids have to go to RM for 3a/b

? DP.... did this change from three years ago, because when my now 9th grader was going into 6th grade, DC had the option to take spanish 1a/1b. So did my DC#2 in 6th grade.

My 12th grader was limited to Spanish 1a or French 1a over the course of the whole year. Then the other half in 7th. Many other MS were offering 1a/1b in 6th but not JW. Now sure when they changed it...

Yes - the current 8th grader’s could only choose 1a as 6th grader’s and they then took 1b as 7th grader’s. If they were more advanced (coming from French immersion, some the language at home), they could place into a higher level but that means they would need to go to the high school to accomodate the 3rd level.

I know a few 8th graders who go to RM first period (the high school first period. Not middle school first period) and just come back to jw after first period.

And it is the only semester option for all the electives. Band, Chorus, and Art are all full year options. So what do you take the other semester when you are done imagineering tech? Study hall or something else? No one knew the answer. LOL.

In my session this was actually answered. If you pick Imagineering tech for semester you automatically get art rotation for next semester. Art rotation is full year, BUT you get different class every quarter from the five options offered. You cant pick your options, which is ridiculous.

Is it common NOT to offer 3ab languages in middle school in Montgomery county ? Or just JW ? The MS DC went to offered both Spanish and French 3ab, kids do need to go to their HS for advanced math not languages

Did they end up going to RM for Spanish 3 then ? Since Spanish 3 was not offered at JW back then, I think that’s why they discouraged kids to take 1ab in 6th grade, they would have no option but go to RM in 8th grade

Yes, it’s common. My DC in 5th grade is only allowed to sign up for 1a in 6th. They don’t want to have to give 3ab at the MS. They said that the HS teachers are telling them that freshman coming in with 3ab from MS are not really prepared for level 4 because MS 3ab is not as rigorous as HS 3ab. They did not allow 1ab as an option for 6th graders, though they do allow it for 7th graders. They suggested that if you insisted on trying to get your 6th grader into 1ab then your 6th grader would be in a class with all 7th graders and would have to eat lunch with the 7th graders.
