When MCPS hold community meetings, they always make sure all attendees follow their carefully crafted questions and agenda. MCPS rarely allows Q&A session. Last week at Gaithurberg HS, WXY did exastly the same. Parents were frastrated and wanted to get more information but WXY rep refused to answer any question. Tonight, democracy prevailed. Parents got the microphne and were able to ask question or share their experiences. Hopefully MCPS will listen. Boundary study for new school or reducing crowding is fine. Please don't not try to shift boundary for diversity. The rep at the meeting could give a straight answer on their definition of diversity!
Racism prevailed
I am baffled as to how people conclude this is about race. I saw some photos and videos, and the crowd at that meeting had many people of color speaking out. One in particular was an African American woman. It is hardly about race, but more about parents who want to keep their kids from getting on a bus for 30 minutes every morning. I agree boundaries need to be reviewed and "shifted," but the language crafted has put "diversity" as the priority...weighted more than proximity and other factors. That group of parents thinks diversity should be considered, but not be weighted more heavily than other factors. That would allow extreme bussing in the name of diversity. Everybody loses...especially the most disadvantaged people they are trying to help.
