Chill out folks.

They should be beating them by 3 goals. The US is underperforming. Dunn is not a fullback...lots of players playing out of position and bad chemistry. It’s hard to tell if it’s bad chemistry or just players in the wrong position.

How do you calculate that they "should" and by 3??? Underperforming? Nonsense.

We beat Spain 1-0 in January with almost the exact same lineups for both teams, Spain had more possession, and we fouled them 16-8.
This game was always going to be a grind game.

Give Spain credit for grinding today. And the US as well. Ellis smartly kept her grinders in and tried to sub off some time at the end. Professional coaching = for the win.
And she tuck to her 4-3-3 instead of dropping a forward into midfield. Play the way you're designed!!

The game against Thailand was a joke. We beat Sweden 2-0. In 2019 Spain lost only to ENG 2-1 and Germany 1-0. No one beat them by more than 1 goal.
The Tournament started today for the USWNT.

Game against France will be more of the same - a grind. The book is out on the USWNT and how to play them: contact, deny corners, counter. . Kudos to Ellis for keeping them in and not rewarding Spain by taking out our starters. Make no mistake France is good, possibly a faster more fluid team than US. Lavalle will be critical with her speed and playmaking and Ertz getting forward from her defensive mid. Morgan gets the press, Rapinoe takes the glory, but this tournament comes down to Lavalle and Ertz.

Exactly. People seem to think the US should crush every team...doesn't work like that.
Spain will be one of favorites in four years, if not the best team in the world.

This was a great game if you love competition. I feel sorry for people that love winning or their country(as far as sports go) more than the game, and can't appreciate a grind gutsy win. Would a 3 goal margin get a bye into the final?? So many little things too appreciate in this game. I'd love to know Lavalle's work rate and distance covered in this game, on a short turnaround and still doing so many things right to create and deny space and chances.

Did you watch the game? You seem like one of those people who chant USA USA USA and think it’s so neat that women are playing a sport, The US should have won that game easily. The opportunities to score were there but the opportunities died as the ball went to Rapinio’s foot - too slow, tired legs, lack of creativity..no threat. It’s coaching that has Rapinio is getting touches as the playmaker from the left vs Lavelle in the middle. Lavelle would be so much more threatening as a playmaker if she was getting the ball in the final third with a threat on the left side. Dunn is going to get exposed against the French. No way she will be able to deal with Diani.

We’re very good, but it’s clear Ellis wants them to play a style or is utilizing tactics that just don’t fit the pieces she has at her disposal. Just like people are complaining that Rapinoe can’t chase those balls down, you can argue that we’re not playing to her strengths and giving it to feet. This in particular would allow Dunn to maximize her skill set by hitting overlaps like a second winger, but nope, long/through balls to death.

We should still have enough to win the whole thing, but if we don’t, it will be due to Naeher. She is shaky and doesn’t inspire much confidence. Still no reason to act like the world is ending since France didn’t look that great either. Norway put in the best performance of the knockout rounds thus far.

Rapinio is fine against competition like Thailand but not against the top teams. It’s seem the offensive is to run through her with Dunn but it does not work with her being the playmaker. She is just not a threat. Would really like to see a younger more dynamic players who style complements Lavelle and Heath in her position.

Friday will be their last game. Can’t wait!!

I really think that benching your captain is the best way to lose the locker room. Rapinoe deserves the opportunity to see it through this competition, but Ellis is not doing her any favors by essentially making her play the full 90. Sending Press against tired legs could be a hell of a game-changer. People are dumping on Rapinoe but she wasn’t that bad, again I just don’t think she’s being used properly. Morgan starting when she is clearly not fit is another head-scratcher, which again falls on the coach and her selections.

I maintain that if we go out, it will be due to Naeher. Weakest link on the team by far.

As to what the earlier poster said regarding the tactical switch to 4-3-3, I agree it’s a better fit for the players available, but the approach doesn’t make sense. Regardless of who is in the mid, of you have that additional centermid why would you not incorporate more elements of possession and a more controlled attack? The direct play and through balls into space are just not a good fit for our attacking trident, regardless of who’s on the field. This would also allow our fullbacks to actually get forward and support the attack, which should be the whole point of playing Dunn at LB. it bogs everything down and turns games vs quality opposition into battles of attrition, when we have a team that’s good enough to control any of our opponents. If that doesn’t change, good luck working that direct play against Renard.

O
Yes I watched the game. That’s why i gave an 11 putting Morgan and Tapinoe on the bench and suggesting Lloyd and Heath up top with Lavelle as a false 9

Captain? Rapinoe actually quit running on a ball from sweet Baby today. For that alone I’d sit her.

I’m one of those people that played coached, still do, am licensed, ca break down tactics, set them, change them on the fly
And knows there are different approaches and the only right one is the one that works and wins the game fairly.
I don’t chant since the miracle on ice, I ain’t your friend, and I don’t value opinions that have to bolster themselves with attempts at personal insults
Yo who you imagine I must be because you tho k my opinion is different than yours

Dunn's speed will be necessary v Diani. Diani lit to us up from the striker position not the left. She’ll play there again Friday I expect Because if respect for Dunn’s speed. chess not checkers game is played on field not paper

Not sure why people are hyping up France so much either. They looked pedestrian against Brazil who had also looked very pedestrian themselves. Norway’s the team that scares me.

the path just got easier for us. The best team just got knocked out thanks to the ref.

Japan, the best team? I'd put them 4 or 5 or so in the tournament so far.
And don't blame the ref, blame the FIFA guidance to the ref...that's exactly how they want it called. If your arms aren't pressed againt the side of your body, and the ball hits your arm, it's a penalty...sucks, but at least they've been consistent about it, from the men's WC to the Champions league, to the WWC.

I’m not talking about final scores or rankings, I’m talking about quality of play. The best team in the knockout rounds thus far just got knocked out by their profligacy and a stupid rule. Norway and Japan played head and shoulders above everyone else in this round of 16.
Anonymous
Jw who has played the best in the knockout rounds in your opinion? I’m sure we could get multiple answers and they could all hold a certain weight. All the teams still in are good, and a lot of the ones who got knocked out were quite good too.

Rapinoe is over rated and terrible team player.

Tobin Heath is under utilized on the set plays something terrible.

I know right? I would rather have Lavelle or Heath with the ball vs Rapinoe. I was talking with a friend about who would you have on the USA team. We both came up with two teams but Rapinoe was not in the mix, let alone a starter. It’s crazy to see her on the field with the talent on the bench.
