Notre Dame cathedral is on fire.

BTW to the historically ignorant, it isn't a secret that one of the reasons the French capitulated to the Nazis was to save Paris. Open a history book for crying out loud. And yes, they capitulated and shipped off their Jews. ANd yes, there was a resistance but that wasn't the formal government.

I truly don't understand how anyone can think losing a 900+ yr old building of such beauty and grand scale is not a tragedy to everyone. I'm thankful no lives were lost, of course. But that doesn't mean it's not a tragedy to lose the building.

The article is so ominous.

There’s scaffolding all around the area where the fire started. In the attic. Most likely construction related.

Or intentionally

I was heartbroken when my 13-year old son told me about this. I am so glad I have visited, but my kids have not been to Paris yet and I this was one of my favorite sites. 13th Century---it's so sad .

Just like it isn't a secret (althout not taught in the US) that the US firebombed Dresden (destroying similar cathedrals, etc and killing hundreds of thousands) for no military reason whatsoever--just to destroy the city and morale.

War sucks.

I'm the first PP quoted. I absolutely think this is a tragedy. It was the NO IT NOT'ers that were driving me crazy.

While I do think it is very sad... it was rebuilt 150 years ago. So...I'm just trying to keep things in perspective.

I can't stop crying about this. What a loss.

Of course it can. We haven’t lost the knowledge. It’s stone and wood and glass. It won’t be likely due to cost.

It can't be replicated, and neither can the lost art.

+1. We don't have the craftsmen anymore either.

It's been destroyed before.. you know.

No, it hasn't. It was somewhat damaged in WW2 (and the French Revolution), but it was never destroyed.

In its history, Notre Damehas endured destruction and subsequent restoration in many periods. However, much of the facade and interior still are true to the original designs. In the 16th century, both the Huguenots and the French king vandalized and changed a lot of the cathedral’s contents. A lot of the features on the cathedral’s exterior were removed because they were considered to be idolatrous, and tombs and stained glass windows were destroyed in the name of modernization. The cathedral was converted into a storage warehouse for food, during the French Revolution, and the heads of many of Notre Dame’s statues were removed.

Between 1845 and 1870, a first attempt at restoration took place. A good portion of the previous century’s damage done to the cathedral was repaired, and new additions were built. Most recently, a new restoration program was started in 1991 and has gone on for 20 years with a focus on cleaning up facade’s and sculptures.

Apologioes (I'm 2nd PP who said they don't understand). Didn't intend to imply that, just picked this one after reading some argue it's time for the building and it's not a big deal. I'm sad about it, it's a devasting loss of historical architecture.

Um-well no. It isn't a secret. But that was a part of an effort to save civilization as we know it today.

I am just amazed at how ignorant the DCUM population is to think that Paris was ever really bombed. War does suck but I don't think I will ever put France on the same level as England or even Holland. Rotterdam was flattened (thus the uber modern city of today) before the Dutch surrendered and today the Dutch are open about the guilt they feel about shipping off their Jewish population. The French somehow seem to have risen up to being viewed as nearly the same as the U.S. and Brits in terms of opposition to the Nazis. Not true. They gave up and were occupied and over the course of the war, they sent their Jews to Nazi camps. But Paris was saved.

But the Dresden cathedral is an example of how well these devastated buildings can be rebuilt. It is magnficent even though it is new (because we bombed it). So hopefully the people who rebuilt Dresden's cathedral can spend some time giving Notre Dame some love and attention. It is just inexcusable that they couldn't get firemen there for 2 hours.

Wow! Whoever posted it is not a tragedy to all is a complete moron. Even Trump understands its historical value and beauty.

Yes. They are saying it was crowds in the streets or something but it is the scandal that will come out after the fire stops burning.

So so so devastated by this. The Titanic also sank on April 15th.
