BTW to the historically ignorant, it isn't a secret that one of the reasons the French capitulated to the Nazis was to save Paris. Open a history book for crying out loud. And yes, they capitulated and shipped off their Jews. ANd yes, there was a resistance but that wasn't the formal government.
Just like it isn't a secret (althout not taught in the US) that the US firebombed Dresden (destroying similar cathedrals, etc and killing hundreds of thousands) for no military reason whatsoever--just to destroy the city and morale. War sucks.
Um-well no. It isn't a secret. But that was a part of an effort to save civilization as we know it today. I am just amazed at how ignorant the DCUM population is to think that Paris was ever really bombed. War does suck but I don't think I will ever put France on the same level as England or even Holland. Rotterdam was flattened (thus the uber modern city of today) before the Dutch surrendered and today the Dutch are open about the guilt they feel about shipping off their Jewish population. The French somehow seem to have risen up to being viewed as nearly the same as the U.S. and Brits in terms of opposition to the Nazis. Not true. They gave up and were occupied and over the course of the war, they sent their Jews to Nazi camps. But Paris was saved. But the Dresden cathedral is an example of how well these devastated buildings can be rebuilt. It is magnficent even though it is new (because we bombed it). So hopefully the people who rebuilt Dresden's cathedral can spend some time giving Notre Dame some love and attention. It is just inexcusable that they couldn't get firemen there for 2 hours.
