Season 2 of “Marvelous Mrs. Maizel” starts tomorrow!!

I found the main character very unlikeable in the first season. I actually didn't like the show because she was so obnoxious and I found the amount of swearing to be forced and unpleasant. And, I was a huge GG fan!

I watched the second season because so many people like the show I thought I should give it another try. I liked this season much better, largely because they developed so many other characters so I didn't have to hear the main one so much. I still dislike her.

I mean, obviously, I get that Midge is relating what he says to her and the fact that she'll probably wind up all alone at some point. But what's the deal with Lenny Bruce?

I can't help with the other questions because I feel the same, but "All Alone" is an actual bit by Lenny Bruce:

Except that the reviewer “cheered” at the wedding scene, which I cannot fathom.

I think you misunderstood. The reviewer was saying she's happy that Midge received some "pushback" to her self-absorbed ways this season. People are starting to stand up to her, like her friend Mary who wouldn't forgive her after Midge's awful toast. That's why the author was "cheering."

"The show’s writers do, to be fair, give their heroine more pushback this season. When she slams male comics (rightly, because they’re pigs), she loses gigs. When she gives a filthy toast at a Catholic wedding, the bride won’t forgive her. (I cheered.) When her dad catches her using him as material, he gives her the silent treatment."

I finally finished the season. I found it so sad that Midge and Joel can't be together. They love each other, but he unable to accept her comedy career and she is unable to stop doing it. I agree there could be a pregnancy while she's on tour. I assume that Susie doesn't go on it with her. I'd assume that the next season starts when she gets back, but maybe not if they have to discover the pregnancy while on tour. I'm sure everything will change with her parents while she's gone. Maybe she'll have to come back early because they can't afford Zelda anymore for the kids?

A terrific interview with Dan and Amy Sherman Palladino.

Cruises are like that but less corny. DH and I dance a lot and I do think it's more of a lost art now, back then everyone knew how.

I wonder a lot about the childcare. Everyone just expects Zelda to do it. How does that poor woman cook, clean and take care of these kids all day? She's there until late at night too.

I was kind of shocked at her performance at the wedding. She acts like she forgot there was a Priest present, but she grew up around Rabbis and you wouldn't say those things in front of them either.

The childcare issue *really* bothers me. I get that this is just a silly, fluffy show and we're not to think too deeply about it or take it seriously. But honestly, the kids are less than props even. No one ever interacts with them (though we occasionally will see Midge patting one on the head or reading to one briefly). I agree with a PP who said this show would be more enjoyable (and believable) if she hadn't had kids yet. As a mom, all I can think about is "Where are the kids? Who's watching the kids??" Not only Midge, but her parents seem completely disinterested in them.

I mean, you only care about childcare because the main character is the mom, right? Do you care about childcare when the main character is a man?

My DH is neither gay nor Jewish and he lives this show. I’m Jewish, though, so he might have picked some things up over the last 15 years.

He’s also a big comedy nerd, and he actually recognized that Joel stole Nob Newhart’s bits early in season one.

1. In both seasons 1 and 2, there are allusions made to Abe's political past, which I am guessing was involvement in the Socialist and/or Communist party pre-Stalinist purges/McCartyhism. If so, why did he hire Midge's constitutional/criminal lawyer from Season 1?

2. Does Joel have siblings? Who is going to run his father's company if he becomes a club owner?

3. Can Susie manage Sophie AND go to Europe with Midge?

4. Will Rose stay with Abe if she can't study at Columbia or live in her apartment?

5. Who will watch the children while Midge is in Europe if Zelda isn't around?

6. Will Ettenberg wait for Midge? He doesn't seem the type looking for a normal doctor's wife.

7. Will Midge want Ettenberg to wait for her after Joel?

8. Will Susie's father come out of the woodwork? If so, who is he?

9. What is Noah working on?

10. Will Midge obtain domestic success after Europe?

I think the "I just want one night with someone who loves me" is going to turn into Midge's accidental pregnancy with Joel's third baby which she discovers while on tour.

Very Gilmore Girls of you. That would be fantastic.

Ew, I think it would be awful. She's already completely disinterested in her current kids. Why introduce another one to the mix?

um, there are certain options for women who don't want to be pregnant!

In 1959 those options were much more limited.

Sure, but a woman like Midge, with access to money and information, could have likely gotten a safe abortion.

NP. I actually agree with PP. I find it disturbing so may postage’s are obsessed with the kids. The kids are not characters of the show. In fact, I think they make a point of sprinkling kids in more often than they should. Joel, getting kid safe place, them doing things during childcare at Catskills, her figuring out the neighbor can watch them on days Zelda is not available etc. I never remember being obsessed about the kids that were barely mentioned on Grey’s Anatomy for example. Don’t get me started on I Love Lucy. Why are we obsessed with where the kids are? Especially when it’s clear they live a lifestyle where childcare is obviously covered. It was very common in the 50s to have hired childcare.

I loved that they forgot about the baby when moving into the Steiner resort. The kids are props. It's funny.

There are still places like that in the Catskills!!! The Irish-American community in East Durham has them. We used to stay at Gavins’ Golden Hill House every summer for a week and it was loads of fun. Live band and dancing every night.

Homestead and greenbriar are still sort of like that too.
