They weren't actually "wealthy". Their lives were completely subsidized by Columbia University, since Abe is a tenured professor there. So that gorgeous apartment is owned by Columbia, so that basically frees up their money so they can spend it on things that make them seem wealthy, if that makes sense.

Not sure if you've watched the second season yet - SPOILER below.....

Abe loses his research project at Bell Labs (long story), and he decides to leave his tenured position at Columbia, so they're forced to move out of that apartment.

I agree. I don't understand how people think they are "wealthy" if their home is being subsidized by Columbia. Now that they have revealed that detail it explains a whole lot about their life. Another thing to note is that Midge had to give up her own apartment when her and Joel separated.

I think this thread touched on it briefly, but what type of attorney did Abe see at the end of the season? Was it a divorce attorney? Or is he going to sue Bell Labs?

He's planning to take legal action against Bell labs. He and Rose are solid.

IMO, they are still considered "wealthy". Everything in that apartment is theirs - beautiful antiques, china, furnishings, etc. Abe is an extremely well-educated man, a college professor. Rose is also college-educated, as are both their children. Yes, the apartment is paid for, which is huge. But to say the family isn't UMC - even without the subsidized apartment - is inaccurate. Abe and Rose clearly come from money to begin with.

They aren't forced to move out. That's looming as a possible event but at the end of the second season, Abe hasn't even quit yet. He's just talked about it.

I binged watched on Prime this past weekend and have adopted "Tits Up" as my new silent incentive when things are tough.

Love this! I'm giving a keynote soon and will say this to myself before going up to the podium.

So you felt the need to resurrect a 4 yr old thread for this? Congrats?

I wonder if it is PP or you who seems like a bigger loser for what they posted.

I liked this show! I was disappointed with the ending though. Joel only wanted her back once she was hot sh*t and noone else wanted him =\
