So ... 22% proficient in math. Which means even the “honors” kids are not all proficient. |
73% of SH students who took the Alg 1 PARCC exam were proficient or advanced. That's the cohort you are looking for. |
Actually I’m looking for a school where the parents don’t feel it’s necessary to pay for a ridiculous amount of outside tutoring. |

BASIS then, no gym, no stage, no library, no outdoor space, no mercy for kids who aren't happy doing an hour of math homework nightly. We don't mind paying a few thousand in tutoring a year to keep our kid away from the BASIS grind and the long commute to DCI (we got a spot there). We can't begin to afford Capitol Hill Day or an even more expensive NW private. We would have taken a spot at Washington Latin, but struck out in both the 5th and 6th grade lotteries. Good luck finding your dream middle school in DC, or moving to the burbs.

| What are experiences with Brookland like? Has it turned out to be able to offer a range of classes? |
Over the years, I've watched many Hill parents who aren't wealthy become open-minded about public middle school options as their kids get into the upper ES grades. The reality is that if you really don't want to move, and can't at least pay for Friends Community School up the BWP for multiple kids, the options you have gradually bear closer scrutiny. SH is really coming along with its honors classes. All the high SES families at Hobson don't hire tutors for advanced kids, or don't hire them much. |
I'm not an expert n BMS, but I attended an open house recently tried to keep an open mind. Forget it, almost a total wipe-out for challenge. Disaster. |
