s/o Why the hate for Talbots, Chicos, etc?

I just turned 40 so perhaps I am new to this world of middle-aged fashion, but I just looked at CC’s website. It is expensive, I’ll give you that. I also like Milly and have no qualms about paying $400 for a great pair of pants or a dark, tailored dress I can wear in lots of situations. However, Carlisle collection is all the over embellished, over embroidered, quirky prints and odd colors we’re all hating on Talbots and Chicos about. It’s just Chico’s for thin, rich women because it’s all fitted and in expensive fabrics. It still looks like old lady clothes just like Nina McLemore.

I don't have any printed Carlisle. I actually have quite a few leather pieces. Like anything else, you have to know what to buy.

Some items from the website that I thought were cute:

I wear simple lines. I actually have a Nina McLemore jacket that she made for me. It's really cute, but a lot of her stuff is definitely old ladish. I just don't think her jackets are worth $800.

If you are Milly pants lady, I find you slightly annoying...but I agree with you about Carlisle. I only recently discovered them when shopping for an interview suit (I live in SF Bay Area, but after many years was interviewing at the type of place you expect to need a suit and my pre-kids ones from DC no longer look awesome on me). I bought a few items, including my interview blouse which cost $200 on sale, FWIW...but no embroidery. I, personally, have found pieces at Talbots that work for me...though I would never want to dress like one of their catalog models. My wardrobe ranges from Gucci and Armani to Old Navy (and sometimes Target, though not recently). I've been known to mix St. John's with a cotton t-shirt and Rag and Bone with Brooks Brothers.

Basically, you just need to be true to your style...with that in mind, you can find cool stuff pretty much anywhere.

I am so glad I have only worn scrubs for my entire career! Aka work jammies, sometimes a white coat over! I had to squash myself into a suit for an interview and was reminded how awkward and restrictive and uncomfortable “work” clothing is. Sorry for everyone who has to deal with this stiff attire every day. Scrubs- a real reason to consider healthcare!

My browser won’t let me see these now infamous Milly pants. Could someone post the image?

I like those pink chinos- who makes them? I love Vince pants, I buy them on ebay when I can get a seller to be very specific about rise, waist, inseam, etc. because I am not spending $300-$400 on a pair of black pants.

It’s because the photo is from 2018. Someone re-upped the thread to post the McSweeny’s article, which is awesome.

Because my MIL who has terrible taste and is obnoxious (my husband wouldn't dispute this) loves Chicos.

It’s very frumpy and unimaginative. Women in those clothes look like they gave up.

I'm 49, here are my favorite black work pants:

They are Milly. Fit beautifully. They look classic and expensive.

There you go. Talbots sells nothing that falls like these pants.

Those pants look beyond ridiculous.

Only someone who has no style would say this. They might not look good on YOU, but they are not ridiculous. I'm an executive and these pants are fabulous. I have them in white and black. I may buy another pair just because they are so fabulous.

Being executive doesn’t mean being fashionable and stylish.

Sure if you can afford St John or Carolina Herrera why bother going to Talbots? LOL, I LOVE Talbots because they fit me perfectly, and if your clothes fit perfectly you look good. I am in my mid 30s and always put together. At Talbot's price range there is no competition. Talbots is like Jcrew in the 2000s. It's so hard to shop at this price range, everything else is either super high end or super low end.

I have some fantastic pieces from Talbots for work that are great and I get compliments on. Two black dresses and I think I have a pair of casual pants and a skirt. It's just 90% of the time I try on 10 pieces at Talbots and leave with nothing. It's frustrating. I don't shop much right now because I am going through a wardrobe overhaul, but I truly shop everywhere and see what fits. Especially after a certain age, it's truly about the fit and the fabric, and less so about the brand and the trend. For me. YMMV.

I love Chicos. I buy almost all my clothes from there and everyone thinks they are designer clothes.
