Shaw Middle School -- what's the plan?

I would really like for a renovated Banneker to be at the Shaw Middle site. The Banneker kids and teachers deserve a nice, central, accessible school. I also worry that the school would gentrify in a hot second if it relocates to Shaw Middle.

Banneker's model isn't for everyone.

If folks think BASIS has too much homework and too few extracurriculars, there is no way they will send their kids to Banneker.

According to DCPS (10/12) a decision by 'city leadership' on whether to relocate Banneker is expected this month.

Why the quote marks? This is a decision that will be made by city leadership after notification of stakeholders and opportunities to gather input.

Np. This is a bland statement for those of us who are interested. Who are the stakeholders? Who gets to give input? Who are the city decision-makers to contact? My kid is in preschool across the street.

It's been discussed by the relevant ANC, your councilmembers have been briefed, your SBOE rep has held a public Q&A session, the Banneker parents have been briefed.

This was NOT a meeting to discuss Shaw Middle. This was an election meet-and-greet. Joe Weedon has done NOTHING to reach out to parents at Seaton who will be directly affected to whatever happens at the Shaw Middle site. He may have signs all over the neighborhood as of a week ago, but he's got no interest in the schools outside his immediate neighborhood of Capitol Hill or charters for that matter.

Right now Shaw Middle is closed. There are zzero plans to reopen it because there is not a need. There is sufficient capacity without it.

What is on the table is whether to move Banneker to that location. Which, honestly, is the best idea out of DCPS in years.

Seaton parents have not been briefed. Neither have the parents of kids across Shaw who were promised a middle school way back when Fenty was still in office. Then Bowser moved the money allocated to renovate Shaw Middle to her own Ward (for MacFarland) and now they're attempting to shove an application-only magnet high school into the neighborhood. Also, SBOE rep for Ward 6 has done zero outreach to affected families.

Promises from 2 mayors back aren't worth a damn. The city is changing too fast.

As for the Seaton piece, perhaps there should be a requirement to brief elementary schools about moving an application high school, but there isn't. There is a requirement to discuss these things with the neighboring ANCs since it affects the entire community, not just families with children. And it has been discussed there.

It's not just about Seaton, it's about a lot of families in Center City who have been hoping for better options for their kids past elementary. Also, this is a TERRIBLE idea for the Shaw community beyond families with children, but most certainly extremely bad for the families whose younger kids would be located directly across the street from a high school (or MS/HS combo).

Have you looked at the DCPS population forecasts? There will be a need in the very near future. Sounds like you have a dog in this fight.

Banneker is the 2nd highest performing school in the city, and when you take into account the demographics of its students it's accomplishments are even more amazing. It should definitely expand and deserves to be in a modern building.

For years I thought Shaw middle should go to a charter. That isn't happening, but moving Banneker there makes a ton of sense.

You have got to be kidding. Have you ever met the Banneker students? They would be the best neighbors you could hope to have. Seriously. And there is no proposal to make it a combo MS/HS.

You are misinformed about the MS/HS. There was discussion in years passed.

I wouldn’t want an elementary school across the street from Wilson or SWS either. It’s a bad idea.
