The average kid has nothing to worry about.

The biggest burden is on the police department who has to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in overtime to solve the murders.

Whosoever you think is paying for that exactly ??

And there's going to be 'caught in the crossfire' accidents, people have to avoid some public parks now (wheaton regional??), sometimes gang members lure innocent people in for 'dates' which turn out to be gang initiation murders in the woods, and what of all the innocent nonwhite people who might be mistaken for someone else or who might have to live/go to school & work with these people?

It has to stop.

Gang members don't invite innocent people in for "dates". That is ridiculous. They lure wannabe gang members or snitches to wooded areas and either gang bang them or kill them.

If you want to ignore the Hispanic population in the DCC we are never going to have an honest conversation.

Blair - 33.5% Hispanic
Einstein - 49.7% Hispanic
Wheaton - 52.3% Hispanic
Northwood - 54.0% Hispanic
Kennedy - 55.5% Hispanic

Why is it mean to point out that one should look for concentrations of the typical demographics that make up a body to calculate the likelihood of them being there? Or is it mean to point out that people are poor and don’t speak English at a native level? Yes all poor kids are gang members but just about every gang member is a poor kid and how many MS13 kids are taking AP English?

For the same reason you can't look at neighborhoods with a lot of muslims as an indicator of terrorist activity or neighborhoods with a lot of poor whites as indicators of white supremacist activity. How about neighborhoods of "loner white men" as indicators of mass shooting activity. Neighborhoods of fraternity boys as indicators of violent hazing behavior.

You can't do these things because the rare outlier of any group does not bear any resemblance to the average person in that group.

Well Hugh populations of Muslims does increase one’s odds of a Muslim terrorist just as Hugh populations of white people increases the risk of a crazy white person. Gangs are mostly poor and ignorant individuals so why is it taboo to point out that the clearest metric the schools provide to identity those types of kids? How many MS13 do you think are at McLean HS? Now let’s talk Freedom High in Woodbridge, which public metric should people look at?

Well, AAs are statistically more likely to be incarcerated than whites, so go ahead and cross off any schools with AAs. And to be fair, whites are much more likely to be alcoholics or addicted to opioids, so you'd better not go to schools with whites either. Asians are definitely known for being very stressed out due to parental demands, so cross them off too. OK, so who's left for your kids to go to school with so you know they'll always be safe and happy?

Yah such rare outliers, rationalize all you want. All areas are not equal and there is a growing problem in silver spring and your Kumbaya attitude and indifference is enabling it. Enjoy you lower mortgage, you get what you pay for.

I don't understand the point of posting an article about an area with literally millions of people and saying "OMG crime!" It proves nothing. The majority of middle class families (and let's face it, on DCUM many of are UMC by national standards) on this board who live in SS are not exposed to this.

Blind to it and not exsposed are two different things. Tell you what, I’ll bet you the next MS13 murder is in silver spring and you bet Bethesda and we will check back here in a week of so when it happens.

You clearly missed my point..but okay meet back after next MS13 murder!

Moron.

Silver spring is the winner

The victim, who has not yet been identified, was stabbed more than 100 times in Wheaton, Maryland just outside Washington DC, according to a statement by the Montgomery County Police Department. Authorities have so far arrested Miguel Angel Lopez-Abrego, 19, on first-degree murder.

Dedicated to all the little clueless, sympathetic wallflowers out there..

There needs to be ZERO tolerance at our schools and community. The next time I hear someone say teachers need to be more tolerant or that Anti-Gang Police activity at schools is too "heavy-handed", I seriously want to throw up.

I agree completely! Saw this story also and wanted to vomit.

Wake up people. This is not a political issue. It’s about public safety. It is absolutely a problem and those of us who work or attend schools with a high El Salvadoran population recognize that there is a problem.

I agree with the people who say that MS-13 should be labeled as a terrorist organization.

And to those who say the crime only affects other Latinos, so it’s not a big deal - I completely reject that BS argument.

The link below gets you to a list of teacher and student survey responses from all MCPS schools. You have to follow the links to the HS page, then to the results for each school individually. The student results are at the bottom of the report after the teacher results. There is one question on whether students feel safe. One thing I noticed, was that Blair students strongly disagree with the statement about feeling safe 1% of the time, but Springbrook disagreed about 10% of the time. This might give OP some information about how students feel about safety at the various schools.

Let’s all go for a walk in that beautiful park with the kids, right?

Why are you sending your kid to a downcountry school? It makes no sense if you don't live in the area.

They are in a down County gifted and talented program so they get the choice of a county or down County . Makes complete sense it's Montgomery county's policy

So they are eligible to apply to DCC schools or to be a part of the DCC lottery?

OP I taught at a school with a gang presence. It's true that the average student wouldn't know who was a gang member unless they were told. And that the unsafe situations we heard about all took place off school grounds, and after school hours. During school, if you were sitting next to a gang member in class, you were talking about how the homework went, and when is the upcoming test. Just like the other kids. What gang issues the friends did the friends cite? By the way, when I was teaching, recruitment was done mostly at the middle school level.

That is so sad. That shows they are still kids that can be saved.

I'm the PP you quoted. Yes.

These "kids" routinely torture and kill other kids. They do it in groups of 10 or more. They look llike kids, but they are not innocent. Their youthful appearance makes them even more dangerous, imo.

If you live upcounty, then why look at the DCC?

Don't most people move upcounty to get away from the gang activity in the DCC?

Let me guess: you moved to Germantown or Gaithersburg...which are worse than the DCC?

Is anyone else afraid to go to Westfield Wheaton or, say, the Wheaton KFC?

No. Not at all.

Apparently not. Yesterday I drove around for 20 minutes looking for a parking place at the Wheaton mall and eventually just gave up and went home.
