Yes, they do know better, because people are telling them to apply to a couple safety schools and they are ignoring the advice (assuming this actually happens). No sympathy for that. |
Because you never made any dumb decisions when you were 17? Most of us do. I'm with the PP who advocates compassion. |
The problem is that top stats kids don't really have safeties. They are squeezed between the unhooked luck of the draw and yield management. Also, what is the point of being nasty to a kid. I hope the DC doesn't read these boards. |
This is so not true. In addition to in-state publics, there are OOS flagships (whose admissions are very stats-driven) as well as privates looking to increase their median scores (and that offer merit aid to help them do so). The privates include both major research Us and SLACs. Parents need to remember that the most important part of this process is identifying easy-to-get-into AND affordable schools that their DCs would love to attend. |
Did you go through the admission process with a kid within the last three years? |
This post illustrates the need to apply to reasonable safety schools. Plenty of privates in Virginia, plenty of lower tier state schools are available OP. If you don't bother, time to go to community college next year. |
Not that dumb |
Yes, last year. |
Or arrogant. |
OP- results? |
I actually had my kids' log-in to the common app, and thought seriously about going in some night while they were sleeping and adding a couple of extra schools to the application. Am I the only one? I also sent their SAT scores to additional schools which they claimed they weren't interested in. Later on, they thanked me for doing so.
Mom should have been proactive and added some more apps, even if the daughter objected. |
Only if she wants to be a helicopter mom. This is on the kid, who was clearly aware of the process and making her own decisions. PP you are "that parent." Do you plan to send care packages with all their favorite foods, fund all their "extracurriculars," attend their job interviews and so on? Taking over their application process is not the answer, even if they thanked you later. Thanks mom for swooping in and never letting me learn from mistakes, once again! |
Having the conversation which persuaded her to do this herself, would have been better. What you did was sneaky and ultimately undermines your child's independence completely. |
This was an extremely dumb list if you are not a troll. I attended one of the 'safe' schools your DD got rejected and they ARE hard to get in. Tons of kids have a great SAT and a 4.0 |
The top stats kids are caught between a rock and a hard place. The most elite are so competitive that stats aren't going to get them in. The next tier (Vandy, Hopkins, WashU etc.) are yield protecting and likely to waitlist or reject the highest stat kids. It is a tough position to be in. These kids have to apply to a lot of schools and throw in some state schools like (UMich and UVA) and go for the honors programs as safeties. |
