This. This is what's actually going on here.

No, what's going on here is my neighbors are leaving for the suburbs because our public schools in DC suck so bad. It's a question of whether we want this city to grow, and it'll grow best without DCPS. So yes to vouchers and school choice.

Good riddance.

I would say "good riddance" to you DCPS trolls who live in MoCo or N.Va., aren't self-invested in our city, and resist any progressive change. We District residents deserve something for our tax money. You non-residents should get your paycheck somewhere else until you feel like being public servants.

If DeVos has her way charters and vouchers will be in all states, not just DC.

It's a culture problem within DCPS. And yes, they mainly live elsewhere.

DeVos has no clue what she's doing. She's never attended public schools nor state universities, neither have her kids. She has ZERO real experience, credentials, insights or understanding where it comes to the public school system. She got her wealth from her father, who founded the shady and corrupt Amway pyramid scheme. While I'd agree there are areas where the public school system could be improved, DeVos represents nothing but pure poison.

Years and years of "education reform" by those who spent many years in the education field have yielded virtually no results. So really this woman can't do any worse.

Yes she can. Read the article about Detroit posted earlier.

She actually married into the DeVos family. Her FIL is the co-founder of Amway.

Agreed. Time for something new. Time to save our cities.

If you think the lady is responsible for the education debacle in Detroit, you may want to visit a brain doctor.

Did you read the article? I'm guessing not. She was literally one of the architects of Detroit's charter system. So, yeah, she's directly responsible. Try to keep up.

Anonymous wrote:OP, you're poorly informed. DC has a school voucher program that is a miserable failure. Most of the students go to schools that are almost entirely voucher-funded and there is no accredation or accountability process for these voucher schools. The state of these schools is extremely bad. Vouchers will not fix the public education challenges in our city or in our country.

They go to parochial schools that cost less than $10,000, many of which are Blue Ribbon schools where kids learn a great deal in a safe environment. What's wrong with that? PP, you sound like a DCPS troll.
Really? Can you name some since folks on here will be needing to enroll their kids.

Also, you all need to become catholic.

BS, my lying friend

The market will open up to accommodate the voucher amount. Waterside Academy is within the range, and no one gets beat up there. Parochial schools that went out of business will restart. There will be privates that are reasonably priced, and parochials. And no, you don't have to be Catholic to be in a parochial school; sometimes the majority aren't and never become Catholic -> check your prejudice.

DC already has a voucher program and Catholic schools have closed anyway. You are being sold a lie.

Also Catholic schools have been shown to be worse academically than public schools. Let's also not forget how the church allowed children to be abused and then covered it up. http://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2013/10/are-private-schools-worth-it/280693/

I would never put my children in a catholic school. Poor academics and they literally abuse(d) children. No thanks.

^^^ PP, you evidently are confused, and probably prejudiced. Saying DCPS is better than parochials simply displays your ignorance. Sorry, but you are simply incorrect on all counts.

Actually, I have it directly from families who have switched from Catholic to DCPS and vice versa ( and one who went from DCPS to Catholic to DCPS) that the good DCPS ES are better than the Catholic in their neighborhood.
