If you hear a child's somewhat unusual name and you've heard it on a TV show or movie...

Actually, Claire is a fat girl name.. You'd know that if you watched Breakfast Club.

And Meredith, well that's a guy's name. MerIdith is how you spell it for a girl, so I would expect anyone with it spelled for a man to look like a man too.

And Emma is pretty, but a dime a dozen these days.

I just think "gross" is such a ridiculous word to use -- calling Ann plain or boring or dull or common or something, I can understand. And it's not my name or my child's name or my future child's name or whatever, and I like it, but I could see it being too plain for some. I just think calling it "gross" is so silly. I guess if you named your child Vomitus, I could understand calling that name gross.

(And "WT"? Really?! Maybe we aren't all grown-ups here.)

I was the "opinions are like a$$holes" PP. Just to be clear, I meant the opinion that Ann is gross, not yours.

Thanks so much for clearing that up.

DCUM proves that opinions are like a$$holes. Everyone has one; no one thinks that theirs stinks.

How original. Did you steal that saying from your grandpa?

Nope. He was a straightforward guy, more inclined to a classic "fuck you."

I still miss him.

God Bless. I like the guy already.
Yup. Emma is an elephant's name!

...as in "Emma Kate", the Patricia Polacco book? Emma(Kate) is a great best friend. Love the name

Emma = "Friends" = outdated t.v. show = outdated name. Hate the name

Is "Friends" the first time you heard the name Emma? My 10 year old daughter is named Emma, and she was born long before the baby Emma on "Friends". It's a classic name, one that has been around for hundreds of years. To each his own...

It certainly sounds as if it was originated hundreds of years ago! Antiquated. It's just nails on a chalkboard, for some reason. I don't know you, so this has nothing to do with you. I'm sure you have names you don't like.

I think the name Emma is pretty.

I have one of those names that could be a guy/girl name (but is mostly girl) and we did the same type of name with my daughter. Emma is a bit feminine for my taste but very pretty.

I can't imagine bashing someone's child's name, anonymous forum or not. It's just odd.

So you have no names you don't like? Liar. Isn't that how this whole thread started?

Of course I have names I don't like. Never said that I didn't. I said I wouldn't bash them because someone reading might be named that, or might have named their child that.

And I happen to be one of maybe 3 people on this board that doesn't delight in making other parents feel bad.

If I disagree or don't like something, I would voice it in a more mature way than the Emma-basher.

This is not the PP, but no, that's not how the thread got started - it was about names in TV shows.

Of course everyone has names that they don't like, but to bash children's names is just plain mean.

Back to the original posting...
I have a name I saved for years. I would never tell it to anyone since I did not want anyone to use it before I got the chance to.
When I was pregnant and was so excited to use the name, a movie came out and none other than Angelina Jolie's charachter had the name. It ruined the name for me and I was sure it would be super popular and everyone would think I used it because of Angelina. So our dd has a different name that we love, and Angelina's movie bombed, and I have yet to hear of a child with that name.
