Retirement-Where and why

I agree that San Diego would be the perfect place to retire at.

Not as expensive as the Bay Area (Alameda County,) and not as traffic congested & smoggy like Los Angeles.

Not as pricey as San Francisco or L.A. either.

Perfect weather.

Not quite perfect. Near the coast is definitely nice, but, we are approaching "June Gloom" season.

Coastal parts are very very expensive. Inland is cheaper, but much hotter in the summer and colder in the winter.

Colorado would be a no go for me. I have a lot of native Coloradans in my family. They said it's becoming hellish with real estate, people (influx of 9k per month), schools, and commutes. When I went to visit last month the plane was full of potheads (not the occasional recreational user). They talked about it the entire flight.

I read an article the other day about how Durango had been overrun with drifter pot heads. I knew it was an issue in Denver, but I didn't realize it was affecting the smaller towns, as well. We had our eye on southwestern Colorado, but are now reconsidering....

This person is not informed. We live in co/denver (marijuana sales are banned in my county). and this is NOT how life is. Drugs are a problem in our public schools but they are prescription drugs. Show me a school where drugs are NOT a problem? You know you are way more likely to be hit or killed by a drunk driver/person. Durango has always been a shithole.

Let me guess -- you are on DCUM because you moved to Denver from D.C. And you took your pleasant personality with you. The second reason not to move to Denver. Too many relocated easterners/Californians.

Secondly, it's not fear of crime or concerns about my kids using drugs that put me off. I really just don't want to live in an area that has attracted every pothead drifter in the US. My friends who live in Denver say they have to walk through clouds of pot smoke on their way to work in the morning. Just doesn't sound like a pleasant way to live. For an area that has a large portion of their economy based on tourism, Colorado doesn't seem to have thought through the long term impact of pot legalization very well.

Florida is set up for retirees with lots of good hospitals that handle common retiree problems.

Personally, I'd move to Boulder or Eagle, CO.

Asheville, NC - if NC hadn't passed that stupid law.

I know this is a year old, but pensions ARE taxed in Asheville and all of North Carolina, with some slight exceptions. It's middle of the road as far a being a "tax-friendly" state. Lots of people like Delaware because you can exempt some investment and pension income from state taxes. And PA exempts nearly all retirement income from state taxes, and, of course, Florida has no state income tax at all.
