I know lots of people who moved to Asheville. Pensions are not taxed there.
I know this is a year old, but pensions ARE taxed in Asheville and all of North Carolina, with some slight exceptions. It's middle of the road as far a being a "tax-friendly" state. Lots of people like Delaware because you can exempt some investment and pension income from state taxes. And PA exempts nearly all retirement income from state taxes, and, of course, Florida has no state income tax at all. Here is Kiplinger's State by State Guide to Taxes in Retirement: http://www.kiplinger.com/tool/retirement/T055-S001-state-by-state-guide-to-taxes-on-retirees/index.php
