Retirement-Where and why

Anonymous
We are planning to retire in 3 years away from the DC area as it is too expensive. Where would you relocate to and why? It has to have good hospitals.

Well, hang on. What appeals to you? Where is your family?

Florida is set up for retirees with lots of good hospitals that handle common retiree problems.

Personally, I'd move to Boulder or Eagle, CO.

This is my favorite game... where should we retire to?

I like CO, but I hate being land-locked. I've always lived along the coast.

I've also been looking at parts of WA, but the weather is dreary. I would hate FL.. muggy, hurricanes, big mosquitoes. I've been thinking of upper MD or maybe even DE.

Ugh. Why not just stay here!? I know better COL but otherwise I don't see the appeal.

As you stated, COL. We are not rich.

Where are your kids, OP? How about Charlottesville or Williamsburg?

It is impossible to predict where I will retire because likely I would follow my only child wherever she goes. However, given the choice maybe San Diego or Charleston or Florida.

Because my property tax is what I will be making in retirement. Plus I just don't like the way the area has changed over the years. I want to be able to smile and greet folks when I walk down the street and not be treated rudely. Not Florida and we have no family left.

New Hampshire or Maine. I cannot wait to get away from this region of muggy weather, mosquitos, and strip malls.

You might find this interesting. Retirement tax info by state:

I would look at NC, Raleigh/Durham area specifically. It's no further from the coast than DC is from Delaware beaches. COL is much lower, the state is tax friendly, at least to "non-wealthy" retirees and UNC Medical Center is an outstanding hospital.

Bloomington, Indiana. A beautiful town, and because of the University, activities from operas to basketball games.

My parents retired to the Rehoboth area. The cost of real estate is very low, the property taxes are negligible, sales taxes are nil and apparently federal government pensions go farther there (dont quite understand why but apparently its a big deal). There are also good doctors/medical centers.

When we retire, we are first selling our house and moving to the beach (we have a beach house). Then we are buying a small RV and a mid-sized SUV that can pull it. (Our current vehicles should last close enough to retirement). Then we are traveling for a few years. After that, we are either settling in the southwest (NM probably) or Florida - it depends where the kids end up and where our siblings end up.

MD is as far south as I want to go. Not OP.
