giftedness "in" low SES and minority kids. Not "and" ^^ |
Have you seen the other thread, where someone suggested asking the kids whether or not they had been test prepped? Simply taking this step would eliminate part of the gaming. |
p Please give a few examples of your AAP experience that demonstrates how AAP curriculum or the way it is implemented that makes it a gifted program. I compare the AAP program to that of a good private school where the teachers and students are able to have more flexibility in the debth and breath of the content but it is still based on the VSOL that is only one grade level above. |
"Stuck in GE" Your attitude is the root of the problem. |
That is just sillly. Who cares if they prep. It is not as if there is a limited number of alots for AAP. |
How did a discussion about under represented minories become yet another thread about white people complaining about asian kids prepping their way into AAP? |
|
persecution complex much? where did you read that? I see where pp talked about White and Asian parents gaming their kids into the program, no specific mention of Asians doing anything. |
Well, from our experience, this is exactly what AAP is. The curriculum was no more challenging than that of the next grade up. I know that AAP parents love to tell themselves, their kids, and anyone who will listen that AAP is a gifted program, but it ceased being that over a decade ago when FCPS decided to include far more kids than they used to. Nothing wrong with an advanced curriculum, but it's very misleading to call it a "gifted" curriculum. Because it's simply advanced, many of us are arguing that it should be open to any child capable of doing the work. No need for a faux-gifted label in the first place. |
Absolutely true. |
Uh, no. "Stuck" in GE refers to being unable to cycle into and out of advanced courses in a child's stronger subjects, as needed. "Stuck" refers to not being given opportunities that other kids are given, simply by virtue of being given a label which follows a child through middle school. The labeling, segregation, and fixed grouping are the root of the problem. |
It should be based on merit! The US tax code is based in part on social engineering. How do you get some cultures to increase workethic? BTW I do not come from one known for a strong workethic - but I'm learning to adapt. |
This is a great issue to bring up with your school's principal, as your child should have access to Level II AAP at the base school between grades K-6 and Level III AAP between grades 3 - 6 http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/level2.shtml http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/level3.shtml |

I agree. "Stuck in GE" means that you picked the wrong elementary school. Your elementsry should be offering level III pullouts at the least, and advanced math if there are at least 20 +/- kids who can handle the load. The advanced math class at our gen ed program is very full, and it is a test in program tyat follows tue same curriculum at the center. If your school offers these programs and your daughter is not receiving them, perhaps she just isn't ready for a more advanced curriculum. She might catch up as she grows older, or she might find strengths in other areas than math, science, writing. But having the attitude that everyone not in AAP is "stuck" is flat out wrong and is a huge part of the problem, and is a huge insult to your chikd's academic peers and to many talented and devoted gen ed teachers. It is rude and wrong. |
