I assume you're referencing some amorphous area in Ward 8 that is located East of the River, as opposed to the actual historic neighborhood of Anacostia, which has its own Metrorail station? BTW, there is no shortage of young, white TFA recruits working in Ward 8 schools. There's also the lovely Anacostia Park and Pirate Playground. Good story though.

You know what can be transformative? Go to one of the many Rec Centers or Pools in less affluent areas of Wards 6, 7 or 8. Play with and otherwise engage with the kids who are there, many of whom attend schools which are exclusively AA. Have your kids do the same. Not your thing? Play pickup basketball with some of the older kids or adults, assuming you've got some game. Treat them as human beings, not potential assailants. The world isn't as scary as Fox wants you to believe.

No there are parts of the city WHERE WHITES THEMSELVES feel un welcomed. Big difference. So black should apologize because we were barred from attending any white house events even at Easter and created our own event, that is now a tradition in the city? Talk about white entitlement. Its beyond annoying.

White person here, moved into a primarily black DC neighborhood, took almost 4 years of seeing me on the street every single day, in the CVS, in other businesses, and me saying "Hi" to them, along with it taking a lot of other white folks moving in for the AAs to finally stop double-taking, wondering and asking what I was doing there or if I was lost or confused or something - which I most certainly was not and am not. So yeah, there is definitely an issue with white folks not exactly being welcome in primarily black areas of the city. An Asian woman recently moved into the neighborhood as well, and she got it even worse- I've heard more than a few racist anti-Asian epithets thrown her way as she walked down the street...

From reading this thread, it is clear that race relations have not improved one iota in the past 10 years.
Seems as if they have gotten worse.

So, you weren't threatened, harassed or victimized? That can't be when there are gangs of young black thugs wilding in the streets of DC? Guess what? There's a lot of distrust in poor, AA communities, particularly if they only encounter one random white dude for four years. Gentrification trends can be particularly vexing. As for this "Asian," as you refer to her, there can be a good amount of baggage arising out of the ownership and operstion of Korean-owned markets and liquor stores in predominantly AA neighborhoods. That's of course no excuse for racist invective or other coarse behavior but race and socioeconomic issues are not solved overnight.

I've never understood the resentment and anger in DC's black community toward Asians, especially Koreans. Remember Marion Barry's racist remarks about "dirty" Asian shops? I thought that a lot of popular opposition in DC to Michelle Rhee was because she was Korean-American, not African American. The irony of course is that off decades after some blacks had burned down practically all of the businesses (mostly black owned) in their neighborhoods, the only folks who took the considerable personal and financial risks of opening stores there were Korean immigrants.

blacks don't like asians because asians are used by whites as a stick to beat blacks with i.e. the whole model-minority stuff.
