I live in DC and avoid the zoo the day after Easter. Does my voice count as legitimate? |
You are clearly one of the 'racist elite', not a realist who believes you should be able to live without fear of senseless violence. So to these idiots? No, your voice does not count. To me? Very much so. |
+1000. I'm a transplant from another large city and work near the Zoo. I was appalled and terrified by the Easter violence last year and the ongoing episodes of these young thugs who started throwing things into traffic and blocking the Ellington Bridge on a few afternoons last April. There were a couple episodes where about 100 kids aged 14-18ish started marching towards Adams Morgan. One afternoon a huge fight broke out and kids were grabbing each others braids and punching and kicking each other. One cop had been slowly following alongside the pack and demanding "please disperse immediately" over the squad car bullhorn but one cop clearly couldn't control this crowd. I thought to myself, "somebody is about to die", and after my coworker called 911 a squadron of additional DCPD cars hauled up. Most kids were smart enough to GTFO but a couple ended up being chased on foot and arrested. Decent citizens deserve better than this buffoonery and lawless mayhem. |
If these kids don't know how to behave on the street, then they need to be taken off the street. |
+100 Unfortunately, their parents are nowhere around. This type of correction in behavior begins at home. |
Reston is very scary, what with the allegedly crappy schools and all. |
I'd like to see them import and deputize some Texas cops to handle things by the zoo on Easter Monday. |
The firefighters should have turned their fire hoses on the criminals. |
Ditto. Or just cancel the event, period. It's hard to imagine another DC festival being facilitated by local government if it had a history of gunplay and stabbings, widespread disorderly conduct and vandalism every single year over the past ~15 years. Or if Federal law enforcement has to be called in for backup. This is a, uh, "family" event? |
Soft on crime, whites get stabbed all the time |
I don't think those backwater Texas cops would even know what to do with themselves in DC. |
If they aren't raising hell there, they'll only do it somewhere else.
I say, hold the event, but with a whole lot of extra surveillance and undercover cops. When the hoodlums get themselves in trouble, take them off the street. Good riddance. |
Do you have even know anything about Family Day? You're plain wrong. First of all, it isn't a festival facilitated by "local government" --that is the District of Columbia. It's an official Zoo function supposed rooted in the historic exclusion of African-American damilies from the whites-only event at the White House. Moreover, you seem to be unaware that the National Zoo is part of the Smithsonian, which is a federal instrumentality chartered by Act of Congress, and therefore is itself federal property within the larger confidences of Rock Creek Park. The "National" part could have provided a clue in this regard. Secondly, there are myriad family events at the Zoo on Easter Monday, including the "Easter Panda," an egg hunt, face painting and field games. This ensures that the event is hugely popular with FAMILiES from across the greater metropolitan area, almost all of whom come small children in two for a ionic and daylong outing. Thirdly, there is NO "history" of gunplay, stabbing, widespread disorderly conduct and vandalism every year dating back over the past ~15 years. It is terrible that there have been three highly-publicized incidents in recent years, and generally unruly behavior by teens, but I'll challenge you to provide credible, non-anecdotal evidence of the wodespread criminal behaviors you have described. Fourth, the Zoo Police are effectively federal law enforcement officers because, as noted above, the Zoo is part of the Smithsonian. Setting aside that fact, what Fedeal law enforcement would have have be called for crowd control? FBI, Uniformed Secret Service, Federal Protective Service, ATF, US Capitol Police, US Park Police, Military Police? It's inexcusable that MPD and Metro Police didn't have proactive plans in place to deal with huge crowds which spilled out onto the street for several years but that seems to have changed for the better last year. Go do you homework and stop making shit up so that you feel better about yourself. Better yet, get off your ass and come visit the Zoo on Easter Monday next year. Relax, enjoy yourself, smile at the happy families who are in attendance. You won't be shot, stabbed, robbed, beaten or scarred for life. |
Might I suggest you direct this anger at the individuals who have managed to tarnish this event with their behavior? Perhaps if their community turned on them, things might change. |
To get back to the topic - DC crime out of control.....
More shooting over the weekend and a vote of “no confidence” for Chief Lanier. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/crime/more-than-1100-dc-police-officers-vote-no-confidence-in-lanier/2015/08/31/8816e014-4fd1-11e5-933e-7d06c647a395_story.html |
