Honestly, why don't people circumcise their sons in D.C.?

Perhaps because there are a lot of international families here, OP.

We're in Bethesda, come from Europe and know a lot of highly educated, well-off foreign families. None of us would have dreamed of "mutilating" our sons, since this is not a culturally accepted practice where we come from. We know American families who don't do this either.

I am also a scientist and can tell you that the jury is still out on whether circumcision really does confer lasting medical benefits.

And as for your "esthetics"... Can I give you an eye-roll?
That remark really makes you come across as ridiculously provincial and narrow-minded, OP.

You are not a very good scientist or are in a different field because the overwhelming amount of research indicates a medical benefit. The United States also spends $100s of millions to provide circumcisions to 3rd world countries, which is ironic considering what people think here.

We didn't circumcise our sons because we saw no need for cosmetic surgery on a newborn.

Once the foreskin is gone the sensitive head gets exposed to everything it's supposed to be shielded from.

I'm sorry, but it sounds like you have not ever seen the subject of this "discussion". The "sensitive head" is quite far from being esposed to "daily abrasions." Do you homework, then judge.

So in your VAST experience with both circumcised and intact penises (peni?), you think that the intact penises were not softer and more sensitive? I've only dabbled in the subject myself, but have found intact penises to be much much softer and seemingly more sensitive given that they are protected 90% of the time.

Yuck, who wants a soft penis!

And in my experience uncircumcised penises are stinky, even when carefully washed right before sex. But that's just my experience. Unlike some of the PPs, I realize that my experience is not universal.

You need to get your external genitalia removed. It's a quick and easy process and will change your experience.

That doesn't make sense, they take the skin not the entire thing. Maybe you need to learn a little more about it before passing ignorant judgments.

Foreskin is not just skin.

What the scientific research shows is that the medical benefit is minimal (and much less than using a condom) if you are not in a place with very high HIV rates, etc. And there is a risk to the procedure, on a base level! I'm not saying it's super-high, but it's not no risk. Adhesions, needing to re-do, taking off more than intended, bleeding issues, infection, and of course only very rarely, but yes, death.

Science says it's not worth it for healthy males in the US. Not as a routine procedure on an infant. At best, it's a net neutral-- and that's the science, not the moral argument.

All I can say is I wouldn't do it with an adult male with an uncircumsized one. They are nasty! They look freakish to me.

Wow! I have only done it with one person (DH) and he is uncircumcised. Personally the thought of the foreskin not being there is obscene, nasty, freakish and perverted. Why not let it be like nature intended it to be? Why the perversion of being obsessed with a baby's gentalia?

Because he should make a choice himself weather he wants forskin or not.

Lots of us in DC are expats from parts of the world where routine circumcision is as unusual and thus perplexing to us as not circumsizing apparently is to OP.

I circ'ed and redshirted my kid to give him the best advantage at an ivy swimming scholarship.

Apparently OP is a recent transplant to DC from a very small community practicing circumcision. She does not understand cultural differences and practices of people from different countries, communities etc. She goes around asking everyone if their kid is circumcised or not. She does not understand that it is inappropriate and creepy.

well, people on this forum go on and on about how much more advanced European cultures are, and most Europeans don't circ.

Personally, I'd enjoy this discussion more if it involved less clothes and more mud. But, if this is your thing, have fun. Remember that this is the General Parenting Discussion forum and posts should be kept safe for work. If you want to discuss the intimate properties of penises, please travel over to the explicit forum.

If things get out of hand again, however. I'll be back to lock the thread.

Jeff, you should definitely host some kind of DCUM fundraiser/mud wrestling match! That would be awesome on so many levels!

p.s. Your fingers must be tired from all of that post snipping.

And we'll now be back to body-shaming infant boys in 3...2...1...
