Southeast prep/WASP culture

Race was the main reason. I was the only Black girl at my school, and was somewhat of an outsider. My best friend at the time was the only other "ethnic" girl, who was half Indian and Jewish.

There was only one other Black person at my school, and he was a part of the bro clique. One year for Halloween, he wore a KKK costume to school. That's when I realized that I would never do what it took to fit in with them.

Holy. Shit.

Is this for real? Seriously? Which part of the South is this, Mississippi?

I really doubt it. I am from Mississippi and while there were a few very quiet racist types, I never heard or saw anything like this. Just something to think about- We found DC to be much more racially divided and racist than anywhere in Mississippi.

Please, we've been over this before. Wesleyan is totally unpreppy, Tufts doesn't much qualify either. Williams is maybe a tad too nerdy now to qualify. I'll give you the rest of them.

Places like Dartmouth and Princeton should be added to the list but the bloodlines have been diluted as SAT scores have increased so they are getting more borderline. Bu they both have JCrew stores in town so at least look the part.

Pinehurst, NC.

I live there now. Which school? I would like to stay far away from it. Although, I have an idea which one it is.

The only prep school in the area. I don't want to say the name, but it's across the street from Sandhills.

I guess I want to know what their lives are like a little bit more, so that I get some context to understand their behavior? Like do they just come from a world where they don't socialize with minorities or anyone who doesn't own a yacht/belong to a country club, and they aren't used to women who think career is more important than getting married?

I'm not trying to be accusatory at all btw, I'm genuinely curious to know what their upbringings are like - at home, at church, at school, among their friends, etc.

Uh yeah, wait until they gang-rape you at a frat party. And they would too. You're not one of "them," so not marriageable. If you show up at their party, you are fair game.

honestly, i wouldn't think about it too much -- most of the people aren't worth it. if they are worth knowing, they're going to want to get to know you. and i'm not saying all of these types are stupid, but generally speaking, they're insecure and unsophisticated.

your post reminded me of a stupid girl i knew (northeastern prep) who would tell everyone her family was "italian by way of mexico." yeah, whatever, you're mexican. own it and be proud.

How does going to Georgetown qualify you for talking about northeast prep culture?!

That's what I thought. Please tell me they sent the boy in the KKK outfit home.

Not all Southern WASPs are like this. I know a classic Southern WASP who has all the "trappings" mentioned in this thread, and yet is not racist at all. Maybe a little clueless, but definitely not racist.

Clearly OP feels excluded. Don't let it get you down!

No, he wasn't sent home. He got a lot of laughs from his friends, and changed out of the costume after morning meeting - the time when the entire Upper School meets for announcements.

BC has a follow the sheep mindset. Lots of guys who hang out in packs, get drunk, and talk sh*t about other people especially women.

Seriously? I'm from the South, and the most prejudiced people I ever met were from the suburbs of Chicago.

Ugh. I lived in Raleigh. My coworker asked if her daughter could bring my ex boyfriend to school for show and tell. He was Jewish!! Trust me honey, the South is still the most prejudiced area of the US. I have more stories too about my DH in the South. He is South American. He will never willing go any where in the South.

I lived in SC for a while and couldn't believe the racist and prejudiced things I heard. Like pp said, some had never met a Jewish person and were fascinated when one moved in nearby.
