Most prestigious SLAC in the Midwest?

I guess you can be shocked, but I'm just reporting my own experience. I know lots and lots of people in dc, particularly in the policy/ political/ foreign policy world, and can't recall ever coming across a Carleton grad-- and I do a fair amount of hiring, especially over the past decade. I have nothing against the school, just saying that I know zip about it, while knowing lots about other top slacs.

You don’t know much about “top slacs” if you’re not familiar with Carleton. Top med and law school feeder plus very high percentage of kids go on to top PhD programs. Family member finishing up CS PhD in elite program; many classmates doing the same (in various fields, including math, physics and CS).

Do you deal with law firms? Lots of Carleton grads at the best DC law firms

My DC has their heart set on Carleton. Knows it's a reach but if they attend and do well, the likelihood of getting into a top-tier grad program are high.

I'm happy that some / many in the DMV don't know about Carleton because that means my DC's odds of admission are slightly better.

Good luck. I have heard it's a place where showing interest, like having an on-campus interview helps a lot.

Yep - heard that too. Visited spring break of junior year and did small group info session with admissions, did local alumni interview coordinated by admissions office, went to DMV area student picnic in fall of senior year (prospector tudenta invites), and met with admissions rep 1:1 when they came to DCs high school.

For financial reasons, DC did not apply ED although it is clear first choice. Hope it all works out but DC will be fine regardless.

Nobody cares about any of these schools except for the very few alums (most in the Midwest) and bored moms who spend all day pumping their kid's college on message boards.

Will they give your kid a good education? Yes. Are they prestigious? Not in the slightest.

Oberlin and Drake are probably the most prestigious. Macalester and Albion also have a lot of international students.

Very strong students academically and lots of high achievers in science, so that may explain your lack of familiarity (different fields). Also, while always an excellent school, it seems they’ve become way more selective in recent years.

Drake isn’t a liberal arts college. Albion has a lot of financial issues- doesn’t surprise me they’d recruit full pay international students.

Yes. I'm a lawyer and I know many Carleton grades at top firms.
