Hilarious. I would think Cornell College kids have to constantly explain that it isn’t THAT Cornell.

Was that a joke? Poster said GRINNELL not CORNELL.

Thanks for the caps, dad. I’m aware. Merely making the point that Cornell College students probably face weird identity confusion not only related to Grinnell but that other Cornell. Try to keep up.

Point not taken troll

Northwestern isn't an SLAC.

There is absolutely no question. The most prestigious and best LAC in the Midwest (and top 5 in the country) is Carleton.

I don't think that the "was that a joke" PP is aware that there is a Cornell College in Iowa in addition to the Cornell University in NY and thus did not understand the reference. Which kind of proves the point, lol.

The most prestigious LAC that no one outside the Midwest has heard of.

I don't think I realized how regional this all is until I moved here from the Midwest. I've definitely heard of all the schools OP is asking about, and all have good reputations in the Midwest. But I've *barely* heard of William & Mary, which is clearly regarded as a top school in this area. (FWIW I went to Stanford in the '90s. The other schools I applied to were a handful of Ivies, the University of Illinois, and Carleton. Quite certain I'd never heard of W&M at that point.)

I think most people know schools nationally through sports and the obvious knowledge that there is usually a University of _______ (fill in state name). Neither one of these benefits LACs. Yes, there are some exceptions like MIT and the Ivy League and certainly a segment of the population knows a broad range of schools.

It depends on your SES. To be blunt, if you're highly educated and went to a prestigious college/grad school, you'll know about Carleton.

Not trying to be rude, but really it’s your problem if you haven’t heard of it. Look at its USNWR ranking. Highest PhD producer in the whole country.

I’m the PP and I have heard of it. But this thread is about prestige and Carleton is just not going to do that. I don’t have any beef either Carleton or any of the other midwestern schools. In fact, we’re looking at these schools for my daughter. But, what we’re not looking for is prestige. If that’s what you want, stick to the coasts. Carleton will not do that for you as just about no one outside of some small select circles know about it.
