Oh my goodness, people. Can we drop the Flora/Singer/Flora M Singer/Flora Singer/FS/FSES/FMSES thing?

Or we call it Flora M Singer. I've never heard parents refer to it as Flora.

Exactly.

People have nicknames for virtually all if the schools in MCPS. And just bc you newbie parents at the brand new school call it one thing doesn't mean that everyone in the school, neighborhood, or county will refer to it the same way. Del with it. Some people call it flora....and that's okay.

Please let this thread die already.

Ps - so glad we don't have the school name police at my school.

There are no school name police at Flora Singer either. What you see on this thread is that you have made it obvious that this is not "your school" and you don't actually know anything about it. Please stick to threads about schools that you have personal knowledge of.

I can have an opinion on flora...especially since I know students and teachers there. Plus, everyone can form an opinion on a school based on observations, info from parents, teachers, neighborhood folks....especially in this scenario since so many non flora families (ie from OT) have a certain level of insight. Then there are all of the other flora threads on DCUM...we can get lots of info from those threads. Then there's the K teacher who disappeared from flora right after Christmas (and I know why....do you, PP?). So, yes, I can have an opinion about flora. Having said that, I purposely have not expressed any opinion about the school....those posts aren't mine. I have merely explained why some folks care about farms and esol (without passing judgment) and I've defended the use of the name Flora. That's all.

Ps - you have my blessing to share your opinion on any school or MCPS policy or anything you like, PP bc this is America.

I agree. I live close by and I call the school Flora Singer. I didn't know there was a name for insiders and my friends and neighbors who send kids there have never corrected me when I refer to it as Flora Singer (or get upset because I dropped the middle initial). If you are saying that people who don't call it the right name should not post - I don't agree. They can't post from a first hand perspective but could indicate that they know kids who go there and have heard of the good quality on a second hand basis. If you are asking about the school, you shouldn't have to know the "insider" name. If I refer to Albert Einstein HS as Einstein when I ask about it, it doesn't mean I shouldn't go.

As for respect, I don't think anyone means any disrespect when they call the school Flora. The school was named for a Holocaust survivor and teacher. She was a great woman and they named a school for her. People will shorten the name to save time typing or to refer to the school informally. If I use the GW Parkway instead of the George Washington Memorial Parkway doesn't mean I disrespect George Washington. It also doesn't mean I would call him George if I met him in person. The parkway is not the person. The school is not the woman. If I met her, I would call her Ms. Singer. If we became friends, I would call her Flora. I will call the school Flora Singer because people know which school I am talking about when I say that. In a forum solely about Flora Singer, you should be able to call it Flora because we all know it means the Flora M. Singer Elementary School.

Thank you, PP! Now can we stop arguing over the name?

This is so ridiculous. No one calls it Flora. If they did then the person who knows nothing about the school could call it that. I agree that dropping the middle initial is done and so is calling it Singer.

And using the middle initial is also done.

I've heard several people refer to it as "that new school with half the kids from Oakland Terrace."

I love it! Let's keep talking about the name. I like to call it "that new school with the gorgeous forest view from the cafeteria (or all purpose room if you are an insider and actually know what it's called).

Actually, it's called the cafetorium. Obviously you aren't one of the PTA moms at Flora, PP.

So does anyone who actually has a kid at Flora Singer call it just "Flora?" I have a kid at OTES and I've never heard anyone call it just "Flora" but now I'm curious since one poster is so adamant. PP insisting people call it Flora...where do you live?
Anonymous
I said MCPS teachers and administrators call it Flora....including teachers at OTES and Flora. And who really cares?

So I'm the only one who calls the school Flo Singa?
