"Ghost" - Indigo Girls

There's a letter on the desktop that I dug out of a drawer
The last truce we ever came to
In our adolescent war
And I start to feel the fever
From the warm air through the screen
You come regular like seasons
Shadowing my dreams

And the Mississippi's mighty
But it starts in Minnesota
At a place that you could walk across
With five steps down
And I guess that's how you started
Like a pinprick to my heart
But at this point you rush right through me
And I start to drown

And there's not enough room
In this world for my pain
Signals cross and love gets lost
And time passed makes it plain
Of all my demon spirits
I need you the most
I'm in love with your ghost
I'm in love with your ghost

Dark and dangerous like a secret
That gets whispered in a hush
(don't tell a soul)
When I wake the things I dreamt about you
Last night make me blush
(don't tell a soul)
And you kiss me like a lover
Then you sting me like a viper
I go follow to the river
Play your memory like a piper

And I feel it like a sickness
How this love is killing me
I'd walk into the fingers
Of your fire willingly
And dance the edge of sanity
I've never been this close
I'm in love with your ghost

Unknowing captor
You never know how much you
Pierce my spirit
But I can't touch you
Can you hear it
A cry to be free
Oh I'm forever under lock and key
As you pass through me

Now I see your face before me
I would launch a thousand ships
To bring your heart back to my island
As the sand beneath me slips
As I burn up in your presence
And I know now how it feels
To be weakened like Achilles
With you always at my heels

This bitter pill I swallow
Is the silence that I keep
It poisons me I can't swim free
The river is too deep
Though I'm baptized by your touch
I am no worse than most
In love with your ghost

You are shadowing my dreams
(In love with your ghost)
(In love with your ghost)
(In love with your ghost)

Did anybody mention Sinead O'Conner's "Nothing compares to you"? Also, The Red Hot Chili Pepper's "I Could Have Lied" is just is agony in lyrics AND was written about Sinead!

Poison & Wine by the Civil Wars, written by John Paul White, Joy Williams & Chris Lindsey

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfzRlcnq_c0

You only know what I want I you to
I know everything you don't want me to
your mouth is poison your mouth is wine
you think your dreams are the same as mine

I don't love you but I always will
I don't love you but I always will
I don't love you but I always will
I always will

I wish you'd hold me when I turn my back
well the less I give the more I get back
your hands can heal, your hands can bruise
I don't have a choice, but I'd still choose you

I don't love you but I always will
I don't love you but I always will
I don't love you but I always will
I don't love you but I always will

I don't love you but I always will
I don't love you but I always will
I don't love you but I always will

I always will
I always will
I always will
I always will

Poison & Wine is a musical snapshot about the dichotomy of love - that while it can be the thing that destroys you, it can also be the very same thing that beckons and builds you. This song was our attempt at being as brutally honest about the dangerous and beautiful process of knowing and being known. (-Joy Williams, The Civil Wars)

Ooh, I love this thread. A boyfriend once told me that my music collection indicated I might be a severely depressed lesbian I'm actually quite happy but I do have a thing for tragic love songs. This list (and more red wine than I'd like to admit got me through a particularly hard breakup back in the day. Thanks for this thread OP, I think this happily married house wife is going to stream some tragic breakup music through house while LO is napping hehe.

Anonymous wrote:I love songs about broken hearts (even though it's been years since I've had one). Often they just strike me as so much more sincere and achingly beautiful. As Elton John sings, "Sad songs say so much."

So, what are your favorite broken heart songs? I'll start with this gorgeous gem, amazing lyrics:

"Smoke and Mirrors", the Color Morale

"Smoke And Mirrors"

If you give up on me, then I give up on everything
I didn't come this far to not tell you the truth
And you'll know it's true because the answers that I tell you will make you all feel sick
Feel hateful, feel useless and used, just remember that every piece of trash
Was one time itself first used

Say the word

Say the word and I will go quickly to a light
Too much of anyone one thing at a time will leave you blind
Say the word and I will go quickly to a light
Too much of anyone one thing at a time just left me blind

You need to get through what you are going through
Some day someone, somewhere will need you
If you give up on me, then I give up on everything
Back and forth my reason grows, I didn't choose this I was chose
Back and forth my reason grows, I didn't choose this and I want to go
Home is where the hurt is and no one even knows

Say the word and I will go quickly to a light
Too much of anyone one thing at a time will leave you blind
Say the word and I will go quickly to a light
Too much of anyone one thing at a time just left me blind

If you give up on me then I give up on everything
If you give up on me then I give up on everything

A very upbeat breakup song:

Red Rubber Ball
Song by The Cyrkle
I should have known you'd bid me farewell
There's a lesson to be learned from this and I learned it very well
Now I know you're not the only starfish in the sea
If I never hear your name again, it's all the same to me
And I think it's gonna be all right
Yeah, the worst is over now
The mornin' sun is shinin' like a red rubber ball
You never care for secrets I confide
For you I'm just an ornament, somethin' for your pride
Always runnin', never carin', that's the life you live
Stolen minutes of your time were all ya had to give
And I think it's gonna be all right
Yeah, the worst is over now
The mornin' sun is shinin' like a red rubber ball
The story's in the past with nothin' to recall
I've got my life to live and I don't need you at all
