Huge Duranie here. This song was actually written about a friend's suicide.

Anonymous wrote:Not usually a Duran Duran fan, but Ordinary World

Came in from a rainy Thursday
On the avenue
Thought I heard you talking softly

I turned on the lights, the TV
And the radio
Still I can't escape the ghost of you

What has happened to it all?
Crazy, some are saying
Where is the life that I recognize?
Gone away

But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Passion or coincidence
Once prompted you to say
"Pride will tear us both apart"
Well now pride's gone out the window
Cross the rooftops
Run away
Left me in the vacuum of my heart

What is happening to me?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is my friend when I need you most?
Gone away

But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Papers in the roadside
Tell of suffering and greed
Here today, forgot tomorrow
Ooh, here besides the news
Of holy war and holy need
Ours is just a little sorrowed talk

And I don't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Every one
Is my world, I will learn to survive
Any one
Is my world, I will learn to survive
Any one
Is my world
Every one
Is my world

From the other side of the breakup, there's nothing better than Motley Crue, "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)."

The best! Also, "Already Gone" by the Eagles, and "Free Girl Now," by Tom Petty.
And I don't know the title, but the one by Tony Bennett that starts, "I want to be there to pick up the pieces ...."

Since this is Paul Simon sans Garfunkel, it's only 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.

I love so many of the songs already suggested, like Adele's Someone Like You, ALL of those Ani DiFranco songs (who knew this board would have so many Ani fans?), Fleetwood Mac, etc.

Here is a great David Gray song called Shine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAIcMg8zz6k
I can see it in your eyes what I know in my heart is true
That our love it has faded like the summer run through
So we'll walk down the shoreline one last time together
Feel the wind blow our wanderin' hearts like a feather
But who knows what's waiting in the wings of time
Dry your eyes, we gotta go where we can shine

Don't be hiding in sorrow or clinging to the past
With your beauty so precious and the season so fast
No matter how cold the horizon appear
Or how far the first night when I held you near
You gotta rise from these ashes like a bird of flame
Step out of the shadow, we've gotta go where we can shine

For all that we struggle, for all we pretend
It don't come down to nothing except love in the end
And ours is a road that is strewn with goodbyes
But as it unfolds, as it all unwinds
Remember your soul is the one thing you can't compromise
Take my hand, we're gonna go where we can shine

(And look, and look)
Through the windows of midnight
Moonfoam and silver

I also love Dan Bern's Baby Bye Bye: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waUmHGxBAj8

Listening to the big guy's new CD laying in bed
The one his producer thinks he never shoulda made
But it gets me going, gets me into the shower
What a shock to be awake at this early hour

And you're gone, it was time to fly
And all that's left is the fact we tried
So thanks for the tunes, and thanks for the time
You're gone now, baby bye bye

Them guys from Orange County, man, do they wail?
Shakes my brain and it shakes my tail
New girl on top of me, will this work out?
I retreat to the kitchen and sort it all out

Chorus

You left your keys on the table
And on the bed you left a rose
And a note that said, "My CD's won't fit in the car
You can keep 'em I suppose"

This disc was left out in the sun, it's warped and it's hissing
I can't place the voice and the insert's missing
I turn off the phone so if you don't call it's all right
And maybe I won't listen to nothing tonight

Chorus

Also I am currently sort of obsessed with Kanye West's Runaway: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7_jYl8A73g

I'm the PP who listed You Made a Fool of Me. I think the lyrics are worth posting too:

I remember when you filled my heart with joy
Was I blind to the truth just there to fill the space
'Cause now you have no interest in anything I have to say
And I have allowed you to make me feel dumb
What kind of fool am I that you so easily set me aside

You made a fool of me
Tell me why
You say that you don't care but we made love
Tell me why
You made a fool of me you made a fool of me

I want to kiss you
Does she want you with the pain that I do
I smell you in my dreams
But now when we're face to face you won't look me in the eye
No time no friendship no love
Don't say don't touch you I can't touch you no more
Can't touch you any more any more
I don't touch you anymore

You made a fool of me
Tell me why
You say that you don't care but we made love
Tell me why
You made a fool of me you made a fool of me
Tell me why

Took 5 pages to get to this one? Jeez.

I think Alanis, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Dido and Fiona Apple have some great ones. George Michael has several good ones, too.

One that listened to after my HS breakup was Ace of Base-Don't Turn Around
That JT song he wrote about BritBrit was good - Cry Me a River

And for a really funny song about just getting someone the hell out of your life, I like "One More Minute" by Weird Al. Yes, Weird Al. Trust me, it's worth it.
