I guess youI'll have to watch fireworks at nine at night instead of nine in the morning.

How about whether to hold an A meet on July 4th, simply because it's a Saturday, or do the right thing and have the meet on Friday the 3rd?

Pools are running meets on national holidays?

In 2015, only one meet shifted to Friday. https://mynvsl.com/schedules?year=2015&div=&date=20150703

Same situation, Independence Day on an NVSL Saturday, would have occurred in 2020 .. but COVID happened in case anyone forgot. Not a lot of old timers from 2015 are still around.

Division 1 NVSL I believe is switching to Friday this year.

We're on one of these teams and this is not the case for our team/meet at least.

Whomping Turtle here, we switched to 7/3 so I thought everyone was doing so. My mistake.

All to get awarded fake scholarships (discounts they give every applicant) to podunk colleges in the middle of nowhere you'd never consider were you not brainwashed into your kid having to swim "at the next level." Beyond pointless.

Perhaps, but this is more fanciful than true. Then again, if the swimmer wants to do so in college, it’s his/her choice to go to one of those podunk schools.

PS the Ivy League has swim teams too.

Ours is for sure on the 3rd and is listed as the 4th here. I think it's not updated fully.

We are also on the 3rd (thankfully) but it doesn’t show on the NVSL schedule.

Visiting from the soccer board to learn about other people’s crazy.

Thanks for the entertainment, y’all! Glad we don’t corner the market. 😉

You must be swimming against our team then. We also wanted to swim on the 3rd but team rep had other ideas.

Wait until I tell you about the baseball and soccer tournaments on Memorial Day. You’ll be shocked that an event from 8:00 to 10:30 am would happen on July 4th.

I think we can all understand the challenge of their situation. It's hard to make 2 or practice times, there are other things going on in life etc. If they are new to the team (sounds like they are) then they don't have a carpool situation figured out etc.

I'm also going to guess your Board said "Ok thanks for letting us know" and promptly moved forward with no change to anything.

The board doesn’t have to do anything. Swim team is not a right. It’s an extra activity. And if it doesn’t work for your family, you just…don’t do it.

Summer swim clearly began in a time when families had a SAHP to drive kids around in the day, and still mostly caters to families with a flexible schedule. Our team offers late afternoon practice for those who can’t make it in the morning, but I guess it depends on the team staffing.

People love to say this, but at our pool the vast majority of swim families have both parents working. Most of those has at least one parent who can work a hybrid schedule or can work remotely or work a flex schedule in the summer. Some parents trade off taking leave or hire a summer babysitter. We also carpool and share the load. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Not the best comparison given that many places have parades, etc. on the morning of July 4th. Our swim team always participates in our town’s parade and building our float, etc is a highlight of the summer.

Plus, with Memorial Day sports tournaments your whole weekend is already shot. You are also playing on Saturday and Sunday. Moving summer swim meets to the morning of July 3rd lets families that want to get out of town for (most of) the long weekend do so while still making the meet.

Hard to see any good reason not to move meets to July 3.

Really, who is doing anything important between 8 and noon on July 4th? If you're out of town, well, you're likely out all weekend so what difference does it make? Or skip the meet if you want. If your team isn't a division contender, who cares? But if your team IS a contender, get yo azz to the pool and stop moping.

POOLS are the ones pushing for Friday as far as I can tell. Our away opponent brought it up but apparently we aren't changing. July 4 it is.
